Associations between Dietary Diversity Scores and Obesity Phenotypes in Women
Authors
Abstract:
Background and Objectives: Dietary diversity is a proxy measurement of overall dietary quality. The aim of this study was to assess relationships between dietary diversity score and obesity phenotypes in women, Tehran, Iran. Materials and Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 197 women aged ≥ 25 years from Municipal District 7 of Tehran were participated. Food intakes were calculated using semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaires. Dietary diversity score was calculated using healthy food diversity score. Anthropometric parameters and physical activities were measured based on the standard methods. Multivariate logistic regression was used to show possible associations between the dietary diversity scores and the obesity phenotypes. Results: The mean (±standard deviation) age of the participants was 37.0 y ±7.41. The mean weight, body mass index, waist circumference, waist-to-hip ratio and waist-to-height ratio were 78.3 kg ±1.2, 27.1 kg/m2 ±34, 92.5 cm ±14.4, 0.87 ±23.4 and 0.57 ±6.97; respectively. The mean (±SD) of dietary diversity score was 0.27 ±16.73. No relationships were seen between the dietary diversity scores and general obesity, high waist-to-hip ratios and waist-to-height ratios. However, risks of high waist circumferences decreased with increasing dietary diversity score ]OR(CI): 0.26 (0.09–0.75); p-trend = 0.04[. Conclusions: In conclusion, inverse relationships were seen between the abdominal obesity and the dietary diversity scores in women in Tehran. Therefore, more various diets are recommended for the prevention of obesity in women.

The Relation between Dietary Nitrate and Nitrite Intake and Obesity Phenotypes: Tehran Lipid and Glucose Study
Background and purpose: Obesity is one of the major health problems that is highly prevalent in the world. There is controversial evidence about the association between dietary nitrate and nitrite and obesity. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between dietary nitrate and nitrite intake and incidence of obesity phenotypes. Materials and methods: A prospective approach was...
full textThe Interaction between Dietary Fiber and the Mediterranean Dietary Pattern Score with FTO Gene Polymorphisms in Relation to Obesity Phenotypes
Introduction: Although variants in the FTO gene have been found to be associated with susceptibility to obesity, however, recent studies suggest that dietary intakes may modify the association. This study aimed to investigate the interaction of the Mediterranean dietary pattern (MD) and fiber intake with FTO gene polymorphisms in relation to obesity phenotypes. Materials and Methods: Participan...
full textMetabolic syndrome and different obesity phenotypes in the elderly women population: Iran’s Health System on aging
Background: Current literature has been focused on types of obesity with normal BMI (body mass index), but metabolically unhealthy. This study evaluates the prevalence of metabolical phenotypes of obesity. We also identified the best obesity index in predicting the components of metabolic syndrome (MetS). Methods: A cross-sectional study has been conducted on 164 women over 60 years. Anthropome...

full textRelationships between the Dietary Diversity Scores of Children and Mothers and the Anthropometric Statuses of Preschool Children
Background and Objectives: Dietary diversity score is a nutrient intake adequacy index associated with the child growth. As mothers make the most important decisions affecting dietary patterns for their families and children, this study investigated possible relationships between the dietary diversity scores of children and mothers and the anthropometric statuses of preschool children for the f...
full textAssociations of the Dietary Diversity Score and Food Variety Score with Serum Magnesium and Ferritin Status
Introduction: Dietary diversity score (DDS) and Food variety score (FVS) are the appropriate measures used to evaluate the overall quality of dietary patterns. However, their associations with the serum levels of micronutrients remain unclear. The present study aimed to investigate the correlations between DDS/FVS and serum ferritin and magnesium status in the non-athlete femal...
