Assessing the Subjective Well-Being of the Elderly During the Epidemic of Covid 19 Disease in Mashhad

Objectives: The coronavirus disease (COVID -19) pandemic could be considered as an uncontrollable stressful public health crisis. The ease of transmission of COVID-19 and its potential to kill older adults have the potential to affect older adultchr('39')s subjective wellbeing. In this study, we aimed to assess SWB, and investigate risk factors that lead to a decline in SWB of the older adults during the COVID -19 outbreak in Mashhad, Iran.    Materials & Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 400 people 60 years and over who referred to health centers in Mashhad were studied. In this study, cluster sampling was done so that each health center was considered as a cluster. Subjective wellbeing in the elderly was assessed using the Persian version of WHO-5 WELL-BEING Index. Data were analyzed by SPSSS software version 20 using descriptive statistics, chi-square and logistic regression tests at a significant level of 0.05.   Results: According to the results of this study, most of the elderly did not have an adequate level of Subjective wellbeing. Moreover, the results of this study suggest that some socio demographic characteristics and health related factors could have an influence on elderly Subjective wellbeing. There was a significant relationship between subjective wellbeing and family structure, chronic disease, social isolation, and physical activity (P <0.001), respectively.   Conclusion: The results of this study showed that the psychological well-being of the elderly was not desirable in the context of the Covid-19 crisis. Factors affecting the subjective wellbeing of the elderly are controllable and uncontrollable factors such as social factors and chronic diseases, respectively. It should be considered; we could focus on changeable factors such as community connectedness in times of crisis.
