Abstract:

Human language, over its evolutionary history, has emerged as one of the fundamental defining characteristic of the modern man. However, this milestone evolutionary process through natural selection has not left any ’linguistic fossils’ that may enable us to trace back the actual course of development of language and its establishment in human societies. Lacking analytical tools to fathom the critical essentials of evolutionary mechanism of cultural transmission, we seek the recourse of simulation study as another useful method of enquiry into the evolutionary trajectory of language. In this paper we use a toy model to understand an interesting feature of language evolution, namely, the scenario in which words gets fixed in a population of language users. We obtain simulation for the replicator dynamics that characterise the time rate of change of various words in the given language, using genetic algorithm to simulate the dynamics. We infer that two of the prime determinants for the establishment of a word within a linguistic population are its consonance with the grammar and its communicative efficiency.

investigating the feasibility of a proposed model for geometric design of deployable arch structures

deployable scissor type structures are composed of the so-called scissor-like elements (sles), which are connected to each other at an intermediate point through a pivotal connection and allow them to be folded into a compact bundle for storage or transport. several sles are connected to each other in order to form units with regular polygonal plan views. the sides and radii of the polygons are...

focus on communication in iranian high school language classes: a study of the role of teaching materials in changing the focus onto communication in language classes

critical period effects in foreign language learning:the influence of maturational state on the acquisition of reading, writing, and grammar in english as a foreign language

since the 1960s the age effects on learning both first and second language have been explored by many linguists and applied linguists (e.g lennerberg, 1967; schachter, 1996; long, 1990) and the existence of critical period for language acquisition was found to be a common ground of all these studies. in spite of some common findings, some issues about the impacts of age on acquiring a second or...

the effectiveness of strategy-based instruction in teaching english as a second or foreign language: a meta-analysis of experimental studies

a large number of single research studies on the effects of strategy-based instruction (sbi) in teaching english as a foreign or second language has been conducted so far. however, the lack of a comprehensive meta-analysis targeting the effectiveness of english language sbi is observed. moreover, the findings of experimental studies regarding the context of the english language, proficiency lev...
