Negative Refraction Angular Characterization in One-Dimensional Photonic Crystals

چکیده
BACKGROUND Photonic crystals are artificial structures that have periodic dielectric components with different refractive indices. Under certain conditions, they abnormally refract the light, a phenomenon called negative refraction. Here we experimentally characterize negative refraction in a one dimensional photonic crystal structure; near the low frequency edge of the fourth photonic bandgap. We compare the experimental results with current theory and a theory based on the group velocity developed here. We also analytically derived the negative refraction correctness condition that gives the angular region where negative refraction occurs. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS By using standard photonic techniques we experimentally determined the relationship between incidence and negative refraction angles and found the negative refraction range by applying the correctness condition. In order to compare both theories with experimental results an output refraction correction was utilized. The correction uses Snell's law and an effective refractive index based on two effective dielectric constants. We found good agreement between experiment and both theories in the negative refraction zone. CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE Since both theories and the experimental observations agreed well in the negative refraction region, we can use both negative refraction theories plus the output correction to predict negative refraction angles. This can be very useful from a practical point of view for space filtering applications such as a photonic demultiplexer or for sensing applications.

A Systematic Approach to Photonic Crystal Based Metamaterial Design
Photonic crystal design procedure for negative refraction has so far been based on trial and error. In this paper, for the first time, a novel and systematic design procedure based on physical and mathematical properties of photonic crystals is proposed to design crystal equi-frequency contours (EFCs) to produce negative refraction. The EFC design is performed by the help of rectangular stair-c...

We experimentally and theoretically demonstrate the negative refraction and focusing of electromagnetic (EM) waves by twodimensional photonic crystal slabs at microwave frequencies. The negative refraction is observed both for transverse magnetic (TM) and transverse electric (TE) polarized incident EM waves. Gaussian beam shifting method is used to verify the negative refractive index. The Subw...

We systematically examine the conditions of obtaining left-handed ~LH! behavior in photonic crystals. Detailed studies of the phase and group velocities as well as the phase np and group ng refractive indices are given. The existence of negative refraction does not guarantee the existence of negative index of refraction and so LH behavior. A wedge type of experiment is suggested, which can unam...
متن کاملGiant Goos-Häenchen Shift of a Gaussian Beam Reflected from One-Dimensional Photonic Crystals Containing Left-Handed Lossy Metamaterials
We perform a theoretical investigation on the Goos-Häenchen shift (the lateral shift) in one-dimensional photonic crystals (1DPCs) containing left-handed (LH) metamaterials. The effect was studied by use of a Gaussian beam. We show that the giant lateral displacement is due to the localization of the electromagnetic wave which can be both positive and negative depending on the incidence angle o...
متن کاملHighly Directive Radiation and Negative Refraction Using Photonic Crystals
In this article, we present an experimental and numerical study of certain optical properties of twodimensional dielectric photonic crystals (PCs). By modifying the band structure of a two-dimensional photonic crystal through its crystal parameters, we show how it is possible to confine the angular distribution of radiation from an embedded omnidirectional source. We then demonstrate that the a...
