چکیده

The peak of the de-absorbed energy distribution of the TeV emitting blazars, all of the BL Lacertae (BL) class, can reach values up to ∼ 10 TeV. In the context of synchrotron-self Compton (SSC) models of relativistic uniformly moving blobs of plasma, such high energy peak emission can be reproduced only by assuming Doppler factors of δ ∼ 50. However, such high values strongly disagree with the unification of FR I radio galaxies and BLs. Additionally, the recent detections of slow, possibly sub-luminal velocities in the sub-pc scale jets of the TeV BLs MKN 421 and MKN 501 suggest that the jets in these sources decelerate very early to mildly relativistic velocities (Γ ∼ a few). In this work we examine the possibility that the relativistic flows in the TeV BLs are longitudinally decelerating. In this case, modest Lorentz factors (Γ ∼ 15), decelerating down to values compatible with the recent radio interferometric observations, can reproduce the ∼ few TeV peak energy of these sources. Furthermore, such decelerating flows are shown to reproduce the observed broadband BL FR I luminosity ratios.

Decelerating Flows in TeV Blazars: A Resolution to the BL Lac – FR I Unification Problem

TeV emission from BL Lacertae (BL) objects is commonly modeled as Synchrotron-Self Compton (SSC) radiation from relativistically moving homogeneous plasma blobs. In the context of these models, the blob Lorentz factors needed to reproduce the corrected for absorption by the diffuse IR background (DIRB) TeV emission are large (δ & 50). The main reason for this is that stronger beaming eases the ...

Relativistic Flows in TeV Blazars

Rapid variability of the TeV emission in several blazars implies a central black hole mass MBH < 10M⊙, appreciably smaller than the values estimated from the MBH −Lbulg relation, and Doppler factors for the γ-ray emitting fluid much larger than those associated with radio patterns. We discuss the conditions in the central engine required to account for the short timescales and large luminositie...

Photon breeding mechanism in relativistic jets: astrophysical implications

Photon breeding in relativistic jets involves multiplication of high-energy photons propagating from the jet to the external environment and back with the conversion into electron-positron pairs. The exponential growth of the energy density of these photons is a super-critical process powered by the bulk energy of the jet. The efficient deceleration of the jet outer layers creates a structured ...

Blazars – Theoretical Aspects

I give a brief overview of our theoretical understanding of blazars. I highlight currently unresolved problems and show how multiwavelength (X-ray and TeV) observation of TeV emitting blazars like Mkn 501 may be particularly useful in constraining emission models. I also note that intergalactic absorption of TeV gamma-rays is a process that can no longer be ignored by blazars modelers and that ...

Extreme blazars

TeV emission can be a common characteristic of low power blazars. This is in line with the sequence of blazars relating the observed bolometric luminosity with their overall spectral energy distribution. Detecting new TeV blazars, possibly at different redshifts, is important for studying the particle acceleration process operating in the jet, and it is even more important for studying the far ...
