Formulation and Evaluation of Sodium Alginate Based In-Situ Gel Drug Delivery System of Famotidine

In-situ forming polymeric formulations drug delivery systems is in solution form before administration in the body, but once administered, undergoes gelatin in-situ to form a gel. The formulation of gel depends upon factors like temperature modulation, pH changes, presence of ions and ultra-violet irradiation, from which drug gets released in sustained and controlled manner. The object of this study was to develop a novel Sodium Alginate In-situ gel system for sustained drug delivery and targeting. The in-situ gel formulation of Famotidine was prepared using Sodium Alginate as a gelling agent and calcium chloride as a source of cation. Different formulation were prepared using three different concentrations of Sodium Alginate (1.0, 1.5 and 2%), each with three different calcium chloride concentrations (0.05, 0.075and 0.1%). In Vitro release studies were conducted in buffer (p H 1.2) and drug were analyzed by spectrophotometer. The in-situ gel containing 1.5% Sodium Alginate and 0.075% Calcium Chloride showed adequate release properties.
