چکیده

A White Paper submitted to Astro2010: The Astronomy and Astrophysics Decadal Survey based in part on " The Status and Future of Ground-based TeV Gamma-ray Astronomy " , a White Paper prepared at the request of the Division of Astrophysics of the American Physical Society to summarize the status and future of ground-based γ-ray astronomy. The images above illustrate the richness available to future very high energy gamma-ray instruments. The top panel shows a TeV map of the inner Galaxy at the resolution and sensitivity of current TeV telescopes. The bottom panel shows a simulated sky map as would be observed with a future atmospheric Cherenkov telescope with improved sensitivity and angular resolution that could be constructed during the coming decade. The images are from Funk, Hinton, Hermann, and Digel, arXiv:0901.1885.

Supernova Remnants and GLAST

It has long been speculated that supernova remnants represent a major source of cosmic rays in the Galaxy. Observations over the past decade have ceremoniously unveiled direct evidence of particle acceleration in SNRs to energies approaching the knee of the cosmic ray spectrum. Nonthermal X-ray emission from shell-type SNRs reveals multi-TeV electrons, and the dynamical properties of several SN...

Supernova remnants in molecular clouds: on cosmic ray electron spectra

The particle acceleration process at a shock wave, in the presence of the second-order Fermi acceleration in the turbulent medium near the shock, is discussed as an alternative explanation for the observed flat synchrotron spectra of supernova remnants (SNRs) in molecular clouds. We argue that medium Alfvén Mach number shocks considered by Chevalier (1999) for such SNRs can naturally lead to th...

Particle Acceleration in Supernova Remnants and the Production of Thermal and Nonthermal Radiation

Energetic particle production in supernova remnants (SNRs) through diffusive shock acceleration has long been suggested as a mechanism by which the bulk of cosmic rays with energies less than ∼ 10 eV are formed. If highly efficient, this process can have a significant effect on the X-ray emission from SNRs as well as their dynamical evolution. Here we investigate the expected modification to th...

Particle Acceleration in Pulsar Wind Nebulae

Plerionic supernova remnants exhibit radio emission with remarkably flat spectral indices ranging from α = 0.0 to α = −0.3. The origin of very hard particle energy distributions still awaits an explanation, since shock waves generate particle distributions with synchrotron spectra characterized by α ≤ −0.5. Acceleration of high energy leptons in magnetohydrodynamic turbulence instead may be res...

TeV Gamma Rays from Synchrotron X-ray SNR

Recent detections of both synchrotron X-ray and TeV gamma-ray emissions from several supernova remnants (SNR) are very exciting. SNR has been widely believed an unique candidate of cosmic-ray origin since the beginning of cosmic-ray physics, nevertheless little observational evidences have been reported so far. These detections are expected to be a clue of not only the galactic cosmicray origin...

Theory of nonlinear particle acceleration at shocks and self - generation of the mag - netic field

We present some recent developments in the theory of particle acceleration at shock fronts in the presence of dynamical reaction of the accelerated particles and self-generation of magnetic field due to streaming instability. The spectra of accelerated particles, the velocity, magnetic field and temperature profiles can be calculated in this approach anywhere in the precursor and in the downstr...
