Modeling and Interpretation of Simultaneous Horizontal and Vertical Polarization Transmit Radar Data. Part 2: Microphysical interpretation of S-Pol data

چکیده
In this second article in a two-part work, S-Pol polarimetric data collected during TiMREX (Terraininfluenced Monsoon Rainfall Experiment) is analyzed and used to infer the storm microphysics. Both simultaneous horizontal (H) and vertical (V) transmit polarization data and fast alternating H and V transmit polarization data are used in the analysis. Dual-Doppler synthesis and sounding data characterize the storm environment and support the inferences. The small convective cells examined were likely electrified inferred from the observed negative Kdp (specific differential phase). Since Kdp values are high in ice and the accompanying Zdr values are close to 0 dB, it is inferred that there are two types of ice crystals present: 1) smaller aligned ice crystals that cause the Kdp signatures and 2) larger aggregates or graupel that cause the Zdr signatures. The inferences are supported with simulated ice crystal scattering calculations.

Modeling and Interpretation of S-Band Ice Crystal Depolarization Signatures from Data Obtained by Simultaneously Transmitting Horizontally and Vertically Polarized Fields
Data collected by the National Center for Atmospheric Research S-band polarimetric radar (S-Pol) during the Terrain-Influenced Monsoon Rainfall Experiment (TiMREX) in Taiwan are analyzed and used to infer storm microphysics in the ice phase of convective storms. Both simultaneous horizontal (H) and vertical (V) (SHV) transmit polarization data and fast-alternating H and V (FHV) transmit polariz...
متن کاملDifferential power calibration for weather radar
Dual polarized weather radars, radars that can transmit both horizontal (H) and vertical (V) polarized waves, are becoming more common in the world. Dual polarization is accomplished via fast alternate transmission of H and V polarization or simultaneous H and V polarization transmission. The simultaneous H and V transmit mode is becoming quite popular since a high power, costly, polarization s...

Polarimetric variables are an essential part of algorithms for improved rainfall rate estimation, attenuation correction and hydrometeor identification. In such systems the transmit polarization state changes according to some fixed pattern that is repeated. The simultaneous mode and alternating mode waveforms are commonly used in weather radars. In the simultaneous mode of operation the horizo...
متن کاملAnalysis of Compact Polarimetric Sar Imaging Modes
Recent interest in dual-pol SAR systems has lead to a novel approach to dual-pol SAR, the so-called compact polarimetric imaging mode. The original idea, presented by Souyris et al. [1], employed a SAR system transmitting a linearly polarized wave rotated by 45° with respect to the orientation of the vertical (V) and horizontal (H) receive antennas. One then constructed pseudo quad-pol data fro...

The recent deployment of multiparameter, polarimetric radars provides the impetus for development of microphysical retrievals. The primary objective of this paper is to describe a particle classification technique that makes use of polarimetric radar observations. The particle classification technique is computationally simple enough to be implemented for real-time research and operational fiel...
