Maize Technology Development And Transfer: A GIS Application For Research Planning In Kenya

چکیده
sis of the choice of farm organizations, we will be able to obtain much better understanding of the future of agricultural organization in the transitional economies. In conclusion, the authors of this volume predict that group farming will continue to be dominant farm organization in the foreseeable future in Central and Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union. Such conclusion, however, is not convincing, because of the lack of supporting evidence. It seems to the present reviewer that there is a good possibility that individual family farming will develop, securing marketing and support services through collective organizations. I fully recognize the limited availability of statistical data necessary for rigorous empirical analyses in the context of the transitional economies, so that it is probably unfair to criticize the lack of rigorous analysesin this volume. I would like to point out, however, that the contribution of this volume would have been much greater if the synthesis of the findings and arguments were provided in such a way as to stimulate future research in this frontier area of investigation in our profession.

Combining Ability among Twenty Insect Resistant Maize inbred lines Resistant to Chilo partellus and Busseola fusca Stem borers
A partial diallel design was used among 20 maize inbred lines to form 110 F1 hybrids to generate information on the values of these lines for developing insect resistant maize varieties during the short rains season of 2006. The hybrids were evaluated for resistance to the C. partellus and B. fusca, and for agronomic performance over two seasons during long and short rains of 2007 at a mid-alti...
متن کاملMaize productivity and nutrient use efficiency in Western Kenya as affected by soil type and crop management
Low soil fertility and high weed infestation are the main culprits for the declining maize production inWestern Kenya. Technology packages to address these constraints exist, but their effectiveness is likely to be influenced by variability in soil types and farm management practices in the region. Trials were conducted during the 2008/2009 cropping seasons to investigate the nutrient use e...

The objective of this work is the realization of a map spatialising proposals of management and planning of lands, with a view to their rational management within the framework of a sustainable development. It was based on a diagnosis of the natural environment that allowed the analysis and identification of constraints to the development of the watershed of Ouergha (North of MOROCCO). The meth...
متن کاملAdoption of a New Maize and Production Efficiency in Western Kenya
Declining yields of maize as a result of Striga infestation has necessitated a new technology known as Imazapyr-resistant maize (IRM) to contain the problem. As a result, research and development initiatives with substantial participation of the private sector to transfer this new technology to farmers have been made in western Kenya. This study therefore assesses the adoption of IRM variety an...
متن کاملLegumes for improving maize yields and income in semi-arid Kenya
An experiment was conducted at the research station of the International Centre for Research in Agroforestry (ICRAF) at Machakos, Kenya from November 1989 to February 1996 to evaluate the effect of annual and perennial legumes on soil fertility, cereal yields and economic returns. The study evaluated six cropping systems: (1) continuous sole maize, (2) maize rotated with short-duration legume, ...
