چکیده

AbstmctA direct application of commonly used synchronization primitives such as semaphores, monitors, or the Ada rendezvous can lead to uncontrolled priority inversion, a situation in which a higher priority job is blocked by lower priority jobs for an indefinite period of time. In this paper, we investigate two protocols belonging to the class of priority inheritance protocols, called the basic priority inheritance protocol and the priority ceiling protoool. We show that both protocols solve this uncontrolled priority inversion problem. In particular, the priority ceiling protocol reduces the worst case task blocking time to at most the duration of execution of a single critical section of a lower priority task. In addition, this protocol prevents the formation of deadlocks. We also derive a set of sufficient conditions under which a set of periodic tasks using this protocol is schedulable.

Control for Dynamic Priority Distributed Real - Time Systems

Many of today’s complex computer applications are being modeled and constructed using the principles inherent to real-time distributed object systems. In response to this demand, the Object Management Group’s (OMG) Real-Time Special Interest Group (RT SIG) has worked to extend the Common Object Request Broker Architecture (CORBA) standard to include real-time specifications. This group’s most r...

Multiprocessor Priority Ceiling Based Protocols

We study resource synchronization in multiprocessor hard real-time systems. Speciically, we propose a multiprocessor resource control protocol which allows a job to simultaneously lock multiple global resources, removing a restriction from previous protocols. Allowing nested critical sections may permit a ner granularity of synchronization, increasing parallelism and throughput. All the protoco...

Integrating Real-Time Synchronization Schemes into Preemption Threshold Scheduling

Preemption threshold scheduling (PTS) provides prominent benefits for fixed priority scheduling such as increased schedulability, reduced context switches, and decreased memory requirements. Since such benefits allow for scalable real-time system design, we have adopted it into our automatic implementation synthesis method for real-time object-oriented models. In this paper, we present the inte...

Interruptible Critical Sections

We present a new approach to synchronization on uniprocessors with special applicability to embedded and real-time systems. Existing methods for synchronization in real-time systems are pessimistic, and use blocking to enforce concurrency control. While protocols to bound the blocking of high priority tasks exist, high priority tasks can still be blocked by low priority tasks. In addition, thes...
