Investigating microstructure of concentrated suspensions of anisotropic particles under shear by small angle neutron scattering

چکیده
he microstructure of dense suspensions of anisotropic particles that are ordered at rest is explored nder shear as a function of particle anisotropy and shear rate using small angle neutron scattering. or suspensions containing spheres and mildly anisotropic heteronuclear dicolloids, after reshearing, long-range order is present in the form of randomly stacked hexagonally close packed ayers. As the shear rate is increased, long-range directional order is lost. At even higher shear ates, long-range order is re-established in the form of hexagonally packed layers sliding over one nother. Suspensions of ordered homonuclear dicolloids are polycrystalline at rest, and as the shear ate is increased, sliding hexagonally packed layers develop while at larger shear rates long-range rder is lost. These results demonstrate surprisingly large effects of shear on the microstructures of uspensions containing particles with small changes in anisotropy. © 2007 The Society of heology. Shear-banding and microstructure of colloids in shear flow.
We shall discuss the following phenomena found in various colloidal systems in shear flow. We recently observed shear-banding in suspensions of fd-virus in a cylindrical shear cell. Small angle light scattering experiments revealed that the shear-banding transition is preceded by a relatively fast process (minutes) of nematic-to-paranematic phase separation during which inhomogeneities on the m...
متن کاملAnisotropic Small Angle Light and Neutron Scattering from a Lyotropic Lamellar Phase under Shear
The influence of shear on the lamellar phase of a semi-dilute solution (36il (w /w) of tetra ethylenglycol dodecylether (CH3[CH2]11 [OCH2CH2]40H, C12E4) in water was investigated by Small Angle Light Scattering (SALS), Small Angle Neutron Scattering (SANS) and rheology. A plateau modulus was determined by low amplitude oscillatory shear experiments. A strong scattering peak perpendicular to the...
متن کاملInvestigating the Structural Mechanisms of Shear Banding Using Spatially-resolved Flow-SANS
Shear banding is a flow-induced phenomenon observed in a wide variety of materials, including highly entangled polymers, self-assembled surfactants, colloidal suspensions, and pastes. Its rheological and macroscopic signatures have been well-studied for over a decade, yet surprisingly little is known about the underlying microstructural mechanism(s) that give rise to shear banding in soft matte...
متن کاملThe influence of weak attractive forces on the microstructure and rheology of colloidal dispersions
Rheology is demonstrated to be a sensitive and quantitative probe of weak attractive forces acting in concentrated stable colloidal dispersions through comparison of rheology and small-angle neutron scattering measurements on a model dispersion with added polyampholyte. Polyampholyte-stabilized dispersions are found to exhibit weak attractions in the form of depletion forces arising from free p...
متن کاملShear- and magnetic-field-induced ordering in magnetic nanoparticle dispersion from small-angle neutron scattering.
Small-angle neutron scattering experiments have been performed to investigate orientational ordering of a dispersion of rod-shaped ferromagnetic nanoparticles under the influence of shear flow and static magnetic field. In this experiment, the flow and flow gradient directions are perpendicular to the direction of the applied magnetic field. The scattering intensity is isotropic in zero-shear-r...
