Can Uplink Transmissions Survive in Full-duplex Cellular Environments?

چکیده
In-band full-duplex (FD) communication is considered a potential candidate to be adopted by the fifth generation (5G) cellular networks. FD communication renders the entire spectrum simultaneously accessible by uplink and downlink, and hence, is optimistically promoted to double the transmission rate. While this is true for a single communication link, cross-mode interference (i.e., interference between uplink and downlink) may diminish the full-duplexing gain. This paper studies FD operation in large-scale cellular networks with real base stations (BSs) locations and 3GPP propagation environment. The results show that the uplink is the bottleneck for FD operation due to the overwhelming cross-mode interference from BSs. Operating uplink and downlink on a common set of channels in an FD fashion improves the downlink rate but significantly degrades (over 1000-fold) the uplink rate. Therefore, we propose the αduplex scheme to balance the tradeoff between the uplink and downlink rates via adjustable partial overlap between uplink and downlink channels. The α-duplex scheme can provide a simultaneous 30% improvement in each of the uplink and downlink rates. To this end, we discuss the backward compatibility of the αduplex scheme with half-duplex user-terminals. Finally, we point out future research directions for FD enabled cellular networks.

On Joint Sub-channel Allocation, Duplexing Mode Selection, and Power Control in Full-Duplex Co-Channel Femtocell Networks
As one of the promising approaches to increase the network capacity, Full-duplex (FD) communications have recently gained a remarkable attention. FD communication enables wireless nodes to simultaneously send and receive data through the same frequency band. Thanks to the recent achievements in the self-interference (SI) cancellation, this type of communication is expected to be potentially uti...
متن کاملJoint User Scheduling and Power optimization in Full-Duplex Cells with Successive Interference Cancellation
This paper considers a cellular system with a fullduplex base station and half-duplex users. The base station can activate one user in uplink or downlink (half-duplex mode), or two different users one in each direction simultaneously (full-duplex mode). Simultaneous transmissions in uplink and downlink causes self-interference at the base station and uplinkto-downlink interference at the downli...
متن کاملOn Cell Association in Multi-Tier Full-Duplex Cellular Networks
This paper addresses the cell association problem in multi-tier in-band full-duplex (FD) networks. Specifically, we consider the case of decoupled cell association (DCA) in which users are not necessarily served by the same base station (BS) for uplink and downlink transmissions. Instead, users can simultaneously associate to different BSs based on two independent weighted path-loss cell associ...
متن کاملHalf-Duplex Base Station with Adaptive Scheduling of the in-Band Uplink-Receptions and Downlink-Transmissions
In this paper, we propose a novel reception/transmission scheme for half-duplex base stations (BSs). In particular, we propose a half-duplex BS that employes in-band uplink-receptions from user 1 and downlink-transmissions to user 2, which occur in different time slots. Furthermore, we propose optimal adaptive scheduling of the in-band uplink-receptions and downlink-transmissions of the BS such...
متن کاملInterference Management in Full-Duplex Wireless Cellular Networks via Fractional Programming
Mutual interference is a key obstacle in the realistic adoption of full-duplex (FD) technique in future wireless cellular networks. Interference is a much more pressing problem for FD system than for the conventional half-duplex (HD) system, because FD allows the same time-frequency resource to be used for both uplink and downlink, thus possibly creating myriad interference between multiple tra...
