TUMMONS,JOHN L., AND PAUL D. STURKIE. Nervous control of heart rate during excitement in the adult White Leghorn cock. Am. J. Physiol. 216(6): 1437-1440. 1969.-The control of heart rate by the sympathetics and parasympathetics during excitement has been studied in the adult White Leghorn cock. The data presented in this study demonstrate that at the basal resting heart rate (BRHR) of 280-290 beats/min there appears to be present a significant amount of sympathetic and parasympathetic tone. This tone appears approximately balanced, as elimination of either nerve system resulted in approximately equal changes in the BRHR (increase or decrease). In the normal bird excitement-induced heart rate changes appear to result from a decrease in the resting vagal tone and increased sympathetic tone, with all immediate increases in heart rate above the BRHR level dependent on sympathetic tone. The normal BRHR can be maintained in the absence of extrinsic cardiac nerves. Complete denervation first becomes evident in the inability of the bird to significantly change its heart rate in immediate (O-6 set) response to excitement.

Endothermic heart rate response in broiler and White Leghorn chicks (Gallus gallus domesticus) during the first two days of post-hatch life.
The embryonic modal value of heart rate (MHR) differs between broiler and White Leghorn chickens, but the initial development of cholinergic chronotropic control of embryonic heart rate (HR) does not. Thus, we hypothesized that hatchling MHR should also differ between broiler and White Leghorn strains, while the development of a physiological regulation, such as the endothermic HR response, sho...
متن کاملMaturation of cardiovascular control mechanisms in the embryonic emu (Dromiceius novaehollandiae).
Our understanding of avian embryonic cardiovascular regulation has been based on studies in chickens. The present study was undertaken to determine if the patterns established in chickens are generally applicable to the emu, a ratite bird species. We studied cardiovascular physiology over the interval from 60% to 90% of the emu's 50-day incubation period. During this period, embryonic emus exhi...

Background When painful stimulations are constantly perceived by the pain sensation system, pain management becomes more difficult and pain will turn from acute to chronic. Therefore, prevention and management of acute pain will ultimately reduce both acute and chronic pain in patients and the development of appropriate analgesia during surgery and subsequent pain control can be important in ...
متن کاملFixed patterns of bradycardia during late embryonic development in domestic fowl with C locus mutations.
A predictable late embryonic bradycardia (relative to normal White Leghorn chickens) has been documented in chicken strains with C locus mutations. The basis of the bradycardia remains unknown but clearly is related to a mutation at the C locus, which contains the structural gene for tyrosinase. When compared with the heart rate of normal White Leghorns (approximately 295-305 beats/min from day...

The study was conducted at Haramaya university poultry farm to evaluate the effects of locally processed fish waste meal (FWM) in the diet of white leghorn layers on the performance and hatchability, egg quality, sensory flavor and profitability of the rations. One hundred eighty chickens at five months of age were randomly distributed (15 layers per each 12 pens). The pens were randomly assign...
