He later attended Michigan Technological University, in Houghton, MI were he got an MS Degree in Ecology. His thesis was on stream ecology. He currently attends the University of Toledo in Toledo, Ohio, working on his PhD degree, studying Landscape Ecology. He uses the FARSITE model to isolate landscape structural elements to determine how they impact fire at the landscape level. Jacob has diverse work experience. He was a Woodland Fire Fighter. Then he worked as a Raptor Banding Biologist. He worked for the US Forest Service as a Wildlife Biologist studying the California Spotted Owl. He was a Biological Intern through the Student Conservation Association with the United States Navy in San Diego, CA. Then he worked for the US Fish and Wildlife Service, in Kodiak, Alaska.

Relating surface fire spread to landscape structure: An application of FARSITE in a managed forest landscape
Recent studies suggest that manipulation of landscape patterns is the most preferred method to reduce susceptibility of landscape to fire spread. e evaluated the effects of landscape spatial pattern and spatial heterogeneity of fuel loading on surface fire spread using the FARSITE model n Chequamegon National Forest landscape, Wisconsin. Five forest management scenarios were developed to genera...
متن کاملSimulating Fire Spread with Landscape Management Scenarios
Collectively, landscape structure, fuel loading, and weather control wildland fires. Our objective was to examine the impacts of landscape structure, weather and fire-ignition location on fire spread using FARSITE. We simulated surface fires in the Chequamegon National Forest, Wisconsin, on five landscapes: a control and four harvested landscapes created using HARVEST by varying the amount (2% ...
متن کاملForest fuel mapping and evaluation of LANDFIRE fuel maps in Boulder County, Colorado, USA
A key challenge inmodernwildfiremitigation and forestmanagement is accuratemapping of forest fuels in order to determine spatial fire hazard, plan mitigation efforts, and manage active fires. This study quantified forest fuels of the montane zone of Boulder County, CO, USA in an effort to aid wildfire mitigation planning and provide a metric by which LANDFIRE national fuel maps may be compared....
متن کاملMeasuring the effect of fuel treatments on forest carbon using landscape risk analysis
Wildfire simulation modelling was used to examine whether fuel reduction treatments can potentially reduce future wildfire emissions and provide carbon benefits. In contrast to previous reports, the current study modelled landscape scale effects of fuel treatments on fire spread and intensity, and used a probabilistic framework to quantify wildfire effects on carbon pools to account for stochas...
متن کاملAn integrated model for multi-period fuel management and fire suppression preparedness planning in forests (Appreciated as the best paper of 14th International Industrial Engineering Conference)
Wildfires are of the forest-related disasters caused by inhumane factors. Spreading of these fires is due to the increase of the density of flammable plants. Two important approaches to prevent this occurrence are fuel treatment and fire suppression resources preparedness. In this paper, a mixed integer programming model is proposed based on the covering location and assignment problems which ...
