Ante- and Postnatal Factors Affecting Leukemia in Twins

چکیده
In our 1971 publication of the " Epidemiologic Study of Leukemia in Twins ", several significant trends which may have affected the occurrence of this disease were brought to light. The perinatal-congenital period was the time during which concordance was notably highest. Concordance was observed to diminish in later life. Prior to July 1971, 71 cases of leukemia in twins were reported in the literature. Since then, approximately 17 more cases have been reported. These reported cases cannot be used to determine incidence and prevalence rates since the actual number of twins afflicted with leukemia worldwide is unknown, as is the number of sets of twins presently living.

Prevalence and risk factors for a high level of postnatal depression symptomatology in Italian women: a sample drawn from ante-natal classes.
BACKGROUND Depression after childbirth is a major problem affecting 10-22% of all mothers. In Italy, postnatal depression has not yet been systematically studied. METHODS In this retrospective study we have sought to identify risk factors, assessed during pregnancy, and their importance for postnatal depression symptoms in a sample of 297 Italian women attending ante-natal classes organised b...
متن کاملWhy aren't identical twins linguistically identical? Genetic, prenatal and postnatal factors.
Results of twin studies clearly demonstrate that genetic factors play an important role in the rate of language acquisition and linguistic proficiency attained by normal and impaired children and adults [see Stromswold, K. (2001). The heritability of language: A review and meta-analysis of twin, adoption and linkage studies. Language, 77, 647-723.]. That said, twin-based heritability estimates ...
متن کاملEffects of twinning, birth size, and postnatal growth on glucose tolerance and hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal function in postpubertal sheep.
Low birth weight is associated with postnatal physiological changes, including impaired glucose tolerance and increased cortisol secretion, that may predispose to disease in adulthood. Twins are born lighter than singletons, but there are conflicting data regarding the association between birth weight and postnatal physiology in twins. We studied glucose tolerance and ACTH and cortisol response...
متن کاملAre twins at risk of cancer: results from the Swedish family-cancer database.
A few twin studies on cancer have addressed questions on the possible carcinogenic or protective effects of twining by comparing the occurrence of cancer in twins and singletons. The nationwide Swedish Family-Cancer Database of 10.2 million individuals and 69,654 0- to 70-year-old twin pairs were used to calculate standardized incidence ratios (SIRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for all m...
متن کاملThe Birmingham Registry for Twin and Heritability Studies (BiRTHS).
In this article we present the protocol of the Birmingham Registry for Twin Heritability Studies (BiRTHS), which aims to establish a long-term prospective twin registry with twins identified from the antenatal period and subjected to detailed follow-up. We plan to investigate the concordance in anthropometrics and early childhood phenotypes between 66 monozygotic and 154 dizygotic twin pairs in...
