The Early Steps of Modal and Negation Interactions: Evidence from Child Italian

چکیده
One difference between natural and formal languages is that natural languages are ambiguous in many respects, one of them being the ambiguity of sentences with more than one logic operator. In this paper we focus on sentences containing negation and modal operators and their interpretation by 4and 5-years old. In many cases, a sentence with multiple operators is ambiguous and grammars of human languages need formal means to express a one-to-many mapping from a sentence to its different possible meanings. A widely shared assumption is that such a mapping can be generated by the application of non-visible movement operations, which make available interpretations different from the ones that can be read off the surface syntax (see Fox (2000), May (1985), Reinhart (1997), Reinhart (2006)). The article by Brenna and Spandonaro on interregional mobility for acute hospital care in Italy raises important issues concerning social and territorial equity in a healthcare system. Based on Regions and private providers’ strategic behavior, the hypothesis adopted to explain patient cross-border mobility (CBM), demonstrated by statistical analysis, may be further explored using qualitative m...
متن کاملA Critical Study of the Well-known Opinion of Shiite Jurists on the Inheritance of a Bastard
According to the well-known opinion of Shiite jurists a child born out of wedlock is prohibited from inheriting from his/her own natural parents. This rule, however, is not among those consensual laws which accept no new rereading. The evidence supporting this law is, basically, some single hadiths (khabar wāhid) which suffer from weakness in terms of authenticity and indication and implication...
متن کاملThe Health Mobility Is All True Mobility?; Comment on “Regional Incentives and Patient Cross-border Mobility: Evidence From the Italian Experience”
In their study, Brenna and Spandonaro analyzed the mobility into Italian regions. In particular, it analyzes the situation of 5 regions, with very different backgrounds. With this paper, we try to better define the meaning of health mobility and to find its underlying causes. Furthermore, we propose a strategy that could help in controlling mobility flows that currently are the source of health...
متن کاملRegional Incentives and Patient Cross-Border Mobility: Evidence from the Italian Experience
Background In recent years, accreditation of private hospitals followed by decentralisation of the Italian National Health Service (NHS) into 21 regional health systems has provided a good empirical ground for investigating the Tiebout principle of “voting with their feet”. We examine the infra-regional trade-off between greater patient choice (due to an increase in hospital services supply) an...
متن کاملParameterizing Negation: Interactions with Copular Constructions in Italian and English children
The main goal of this study is to provide a more precise picture of the pattern of copular omission attested in Italian and English child grammar through a closer investigation of negative contexts. If copular omissions could be considered as a reflex of a " defective " inflectional system, in the sense that certain functional projections could be left underspecified in the first stages of ling...
