Absorption and transport of fluorescent brighteners by microorganisms.
نویسنده
چکیده
The absorption of brighteners by living cells and their transport to subsequent growth is described. Brighteners are highly fluorescent, ultraviolet-absorbing compounds which appear to be essentially nontoxic, stable biological markers. They have been effectively absorbed by growing cultures of bacteria, yeasts, actinomycetes, and higher fungi, with active growth centers evidencing the greatest flourescence.

Affinity of cellular constituents of two bacteria for fluorescent brighteners.
Two fluorescent brighteners were used to stain an isolate of Bacillus cereus var. mycoides and soil pseudomonad. The stained organisms were fractionated by two procedures to determine which cellular constituents were reacting with the brighteners. Both fractionation procedures provided evidence that the brighteners were adsorbed to proteins within the cells. Microscopy examination of ghost c...
متن کاملFluorescent Brighteners as Visible LED-Light Sensitive Photoinitiators for Free Radical Photopolymerizations.
The photochemical and electrochemical investigations of commercially available, safe, and cheap fluorescent brighteners, namely, triazinylstilbene (commercial name: fluorescent brightener 28) and 2,5-bis(5-tert-butyl-benzoxazol-2-yl)thiophene, as well as their original use as photoinitiators of polymerization upon light emitting diode (LED) irradiation are reported. Remarkably, their excellent ...
متن کاملPhotoisomerization of Triazine-stilbene Fluorescent Brighteners in Solution and in their Copolymers with Styrene
Bleaching of polymeric materials can be achieved by blending or surface treatment with fluorescent brighteners, FBs [1]. In both cases the FB migrates with time, and the degree of whiteness decreases. The introduction of polymerizable groups into the FB makes it applicable in the copolymerization process with vinyl monomers, resulting in the formation of covalent bonds in the polymer molecule. ...
متن کاملOptical Brighteners Provide Baculovirus Activity Enhancement and UV Radiation Protection
Fluorescent brighteners increase insect viral activity and provide protection against UV inactivation. The relative amount of viral UV protection has not previously been determined due to the dual nature of these compounds. In this study, two distinct viral–host systems, a nuclear polyhedrosis virus of the gypsy moth (Lymantria dispar) infecting its homologous host and a nuclear polyhedrosis vi...
متن کاملFluorescent brighteners: novel stains for the flow cytometric analysis of microorganisms.
Flow cytometry is a rapid method for measuring the optical properties of individual cells. The technique has found great utility in the study of mammalian cells, but microbiological applications have been more limited. We here show that UV-excited fluorescent whitening agents, in particular Tinopal CBS-X, are effective stains for both vegetative microbial cells and for spores of Gram-positive b...
