چکیده
Neutrophils are an important component of host defence against many bacterial, viral and fungal infections, and the evaluation of neutrophil function is valuable for assessment of health status [1]. Some literature is non-specific or contradictory about the classification of leucocyte morphology in fish, since morphology alone can vary by species [2e4]. Most studies document that fish neutrophils have very similar morphological and histochemical staining properties to mammalian neutrophils, and can be distinguished by the presence of myeloperoxidase in cytoplasmic granules [5]. Neutrophils are found in fish kidney, spleen and blood, and are commonly increased in inflammatory lesions [6]. There is evidence for phagocytic, chemotactic and bactericidal functions in fish neutrophils and an intense respiratory burst [7e9]. Techniques for obtaining relatively pure neutrophil populations for functional studies have not been previously reported for the fathead minnow (Pimephales promelas Rafinesque, 1820), and the characterisation of leucocyte morphology and cytochemical staining has not been adequately defined.

A rapid, direct assay to measure degranulation of primary granules in neutrophils from kidney of fathead minnow (Pimephales promelas Rafinesque, 1820).
A direct, rapid, quantitative colorimetric assay to determine neutrophil primary granule degranulation was adapted for use with fathead minnow kidney neutrophils. The assay measures the exocytosis of myeloperoxidase (MPO) using 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine as a substrate. The assay was validated by comparing the total myeloperoxidase content of neutrophil populations obtained from adult cattl...
متن کاملThe Toxicity of the Hydrolysis and Breakdown Products of Malathion to the Fathead Minnow (pimephales Promelas, Rafinesque)*
Abstract Malathion undergoes hydrolysis in aqueous solutions; the products derived from the reaction are dependent upon the pH of the medium. It was the purpose of this investigation to evaluate the toxicity of the products of malathion hydrolysis in the fathead minnow, Pimephales promelas. The studies were conducted by toxicity bioassays of 96 hr duration and continuous exposure tests of 14 da...

Modeling impacts on populations: fathead minnow (Pimephales promelas) exposure to the endocrine disruptor 17beta-trenbolone as a case study.
Evaluation of population-level impacts is critical to credible ecological risk assessments. In this study, a predictive model was developed to translate changes in fecundity of the fathead minnow (Pimephales promelas) in a short-term laboratory toxicity test to alterations in population growth rate. The model uniquely combines a Leslie population projection matrix and the logistic equation. App...
متن کاملHistopathology of fathead minnow (Pimephales promelas) exposed to hydroxylated fullerenes
Hydroxylated fullerenes are reported to be very strong antioxidants, acting to quench reactive oxygen species, thus having strong potential for important and widespread applications in innovative therapies for a variety of disease processes. However, their potential for toxicological side effects is still largely controversial and unknown. Effects of hydroxylated fullerenes C60(OH)24 on the fat...
