چکیده

There is a need for understanding how certain soils adversely affect the performance of metal detectors used in demining. This paper discusses the relevant soil electromagnetic properties that influence detector performance and includes possible methods of measuring these properties. Data from preliminary experiments are used to relate detector performance to soil properties. The results establish the usefulness of creating a soil properties database, such as the one being proposed for Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Influence of Soil Properties on the Performance of Metal Detectors and GPR

A lthough landmine clearance employs various techniques, manual demining still accounts for a large part of mine-removal operations. The metal detector is the most common tool used in manual demining. Ground-penetrating radar was studied and tested as a complementary tool to the metal detector, because it can identify buried objects and accelerate operations. As the metal detector and GPR emplo...

Evaluation of natural radioactivity of soil samples from different regions of Wassit governorate

The present paper measures natural radioactivity in different areas of Wassit governorate, using (HPGe) detector. Gamma spectrum analysis for each sample along with caululated specific activity show that the average concentrations of U-238, Th-232, and K-40 have been 19.420±4.7 Bq/kg, 18.487±5.05 Bq/kg, and 204.266±46.9 Bq/kg respectively, which is lower than the worldwide average value. While ...

Extended ratio edge detector for despeckled SAR image evaluation

Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images due to the usage of coherent imaging systems are affected by speckle. So lots of despeckling filters have been introduced up to now to suppress the speckle. Hence, objective and subjective evaluation of the denoised SAR images becomes a necessity. Thereby lots of objective evaluating estimators are introduced to evaluate the performance of despeckling filte...

Estimation of Relative Permittivity of Shallow Soils by Using the Ground Penetrating Radar Response from Different Buried Targets

Combined ground penetrating radar and metal detector equipment are now available (e.g., MINEHOUND, ERA TechnologyVallon GmbH) for landmine detection. The performance of the radar detector is influenced by the electromagnetic characteristics of the soil. In this paper we present an experimental procedure that uses the same equipment for the detection and calibration by means of signal processing...
