چکیده

We present polarimetric 5 GHz to 43 GHz VLBI observations of the BL Lacertae object PKS 0735+178, spanning March 1996 to May 2000. Comparison with previous and later observations suggests that the overall kinematic and structural properties of the jet are greatly influenced by its activity. Time intervals of enhanced activity, as reported before 1993 and after 2000 by other studies, are followed by highly superluminal motion along a rectilinear jet. In contrast the less active state in which we performed our observations, shows subluminal or slow superluminal jet features propagating through a twisted jet with two sharp bends of about 90 within the innermost three–milliarcsecond jet structure. Proper motion estimates from the data presented here allow us to constrain the jet viewing angle to values ≤ 9, and the bulk Lorentz factor to be between 2 and 4.

The Twisted Parsec-scale Structure of 0735+178

We present two epoch polarimetric images of the BL Lac object 0735+178 obtained with the Very Long Baseline Array at 22 and 43 GHz. These images provide the highest resolution observations of this source to date, and show a twisted jet with two sharp apparent bends of 90 within two milliarcseconds of the core. The magnetic field appears to smoothly follow one of the bends in the jet, suggesting...

Multiband optical polarimetry of BL Lac objects with the Nordic Optical Telescope

Optical polarization of seven selected BL Lac objects in U BV RI bands was studied with the Nordic Optical Telescope from December 10-14, 1999. Two of them, 3C 66A and PKS 0735+178, were monitored for 4 nights for a total integration time of 4.75 and 5.5 hours, respectively. Other objects (1Jy 0138−097, H 0414+009, PKS 0823−223, OJ287 and BL Lac) were observed sparsely during the run. Apart fro...

Ten–year optical monitoring of PKS 0735+178: historical comparison, multiband behaviour and variability timescales

Aims. New data and results on the optical behaviour of the prominent blazar PKS 0735+178 (also know as OI 158, S3 0735+17, DA 237, 1ES 0735+178, 3EG J0737+1721) are presented, through the most continuous BV RI data available in the period 1994-2004 (about 500 nights of observations). In addition, the whole historical light curve, and a new photometric calibration of comparison stars in the fiel...

Changes in the measured image separation of the gravitational lens system , PKS 1830 - 211

Changes in the measured image separation of the gravitational lens system, PKS 1830-211. ABSTRACT We present eight epochs of 43 GHz, dual-polarisation VLBA observations of the gravitational lens system PKS 1830-211, made over fourteen weeks. A bright, compact " core " and a faint extended " jet " are clearly seen in maps of both lensed images at all eight epochs. The relative separation of the ...

Pks 1510−089: a Head-on View of a Relativistic Jet

The gamma-ray blazar PKS 1510−089 has a highly superluminal milli-arcsecond jet at a position angle (PA) of −28 and an arcsecond jet with an initial PA of 155. With a ∆PA of 177 between the arcsecond and milliarcsecond jets, PKS 1510−089 is perhaps the most highly misaligned radio jet ever observed and serves as a graphic example of projection effects in a highly beamed relativistic jet. Here w...
