Iron Status in Newborns Born to Iron-Deficient Mothers

چکیده
Background: Iron deficiency anemia is one of the important problems during pregnancy. Iron deficiency has several adverse effects on pregnant women and their newborns. Objective: To determine the status of iron store in newborns born to mothers with iron deficiency anemia. Methods: In a cross-sectional study, 90 mothers were categorized into three groups according to their pre-delivery hemoglobin and serum ferritin concentrations. Those with Iron-Deficiency Anemia (IDA) were defined as a hemoglobin concentration (Hb) <11 g/dl and serum ferritin concentration (SF) of <10 ng/ml; those with nonanemic iron deficiency (NIDA) with an Hb of ≥11 g/dl and SF of <10 ng/ml; and those mothers with normal Hb and iron status, defined as an Hb ≥11 g/dl and a SF ≥10 ng/ml, who were treated as normal control. Then cord bloods of the newborn were compared among the three groups. Results: Significant differences were found in mean Hb (p<0.01) and SF (p<0.03) among normal control and IDA, with the lowest values found in neonates born to mothers with iron deficiency anemia. Conclusions: Contrary to previous beliefs, the iron status of mothers can influence their babies. Iran J Med Sci 2003; 28(2):

متن کاملIron status of babies born to iron-deficient anaemic mothers in an Iranian hospital.
We investigated the relation between maternal anaemia and neonatal iron status in 97 mothers and their babies. Haemoglobin (Hb), serum iron, total iron binding capacity and serum ferritin were determined. Mothers were divided into 3 groups: iron-deficient anaemic (22.7%), non-anaemic iron-deficient (27.8%) and non-anaemic non-iron-deficient (49.5%). There was no significant difference in the me...
متن کاملEffect of Maternal Iron Deficiency Anemia on the Iron Store of Newborns in Ethiopia
Iron deficiency anemia among pregnant women is a widespread problem in developing countries including Ethiopia, though its influence on neonatal iron status was inconsistently reported in literature. This cross-sectional study was conducted to compare hematologic profiles and iron status of newborns from mothers with different anemia status and determine correlation between maternal and neonata...
متن کاملSurvey of Serum Ferritin and Hemoglobin Levels of Mothers and their Newborns
ABSTRACT one of the best index to study the mother's Iron level is to measure the serum ferritin. The aim of this study is to find out the relationship between the serum ferritin in mothers and newborns, and therefore we use these indexes to assess the Iron depletion enemia in above subjects. In this study, hemoglobin, serum ferritin, transferrin saturation (%), serum iron, and total iron bi...

Background: Iron deficiency is the most common single-nutrient deficiency disease in the world and is a major concern for about 15% of the world population. It has been shown that iron deficiency may affect thyroid hormones. Objective: To determine thyroid hormone status in iron deficient adolescent girls. Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out in Lar Province and its’ vicinity in So...
