Canine Leishmaniasis, Italy

چکیده
We report the results of a survey to determine the prevalence of canine leishmaniasis and the presence of sand flies in northwestern Italy, where autochthonous foci of canine leishmaniasis have not been reported. Active foci of canine leishmaniasis were identified, which suggests that the disease is now also endemic in continental climate areas.

Risk assessment for canine leishmaniasis spreading in the north of Italy.
The incidence of zoonotic visceral leishmaniasis has not only been recognized but is, in fact, increasing in territories of northern continental Italy previously regarded as non-endemic. Recent findings of sporadic autochthonous canine infections and the presence of phlebotomine vectors in some provinces of north-eastern Italy have stimulated risk assessment for the spreading of leishmaniasis i...

Background – Canine leishmaniasis (CanL) is traditionally endemic in central-south Italy, whereas northern regions (Padana plane and Alpine territories) have been considered Leishmania-free (Pozio et al., 1985) until early 1990’s, when CanL foci were firstly identified in Veneto and Piedmont. Because of the appearance of autochthonous human cases (VL), a national project was launched in 2003 to...

Ecological niche model of Phlebotomus perniciosus, the main vector of canine leishmaniasis in north-eastern Italy.
With respect to the epidemiology of leishmaniasis, it is crucial to take into account the ecoclimatic and environmental characteristics that influence the distribution patterns of the vector sand fly species. It is also important to consider the possible impact of on-going climate changes on the emergence of this disease. In order to map the potential distribution of Phlebotomus perniciosus, th...
