چکیده

Introduction: With the SENSE Shimming (SSH) approach (1) a method was introduced recently that allows for estimating B0 field inhomogeneities based on a reference image and a series of points on a single free induction decay (FID). The temporal evolution of the FID data is explained by field inhomogeneities, starting from the reference image, making use of the encoding properties of the different sensitivities of a coil array. The original approach takes into account the slope of the FID data only at the echo time of the reference image (TE). As a consequence it cannot distinguish between effects caused by relaxation and those caused by inhomogeneities. It can therefore only be used for estimating inhomogeneity variations, relative to a baseline measurement. We here present an extension to the method, which takes into account a larger range of the FID in order to explain not only B0 inhomogeneities but relaxation as well. Since the signal equation is non-linear, the linear fitting of the original approach has to be replaced by a non-linear optimization. Methods: The SSH method as presented in (1) assumes the slope of FID data on a sufficiently small time scale to depend only on the B0 field inhomogeneities; relaxation is assumed to be negligible. The signal of an FID seen by coil n at time t is described by

Basic and Tailored RF Shimming in a Multi-transmit Whole Body MR System

Wave propagation effects diminish the quality of MR images at main fields of 3T or above. Parallel RF transmission has the potential of compensating for these effects through RF shimming. RF shimming can be performed in two different ways. The basic way of RF shimming is to adjust the global amplitude and phase of the currents in each transmit element, aiming at a constant B1 in the region of i...

Average SAR Constrained Local RF Shimming

Introduction Achieving given homogeneity and SAR constraints in RF shimming process is an important problem in high field MRI. There are different studies in the literature which dealt with the optimization of these parameters by using non-convex optimization techniques. In a previous work whole body SAR constrained RF shimming problem was solved in order to achieve whole slice transmit homogen...

An Analytical Approach towards Passive Ferromagnetic Shimming Design for a High-Resolution NMR Magnet.

This paper presents a warm bore ferromagnetic shimming design for a high resolution NMR magnet based on spherical harmonic coefficient reduction techniques. The passive ferromagnetic shimming along with the active shimming is a critically important step to improve magnetic field homogeneity for an NMR Magnet. Here, the technique is applied to an NMR magnet already designed and built at the MIT'...

A robust automated shimming procedure for breast MR spectroscopy

Introduction Proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (H-MRS) offers attractive possibilities for the non-invasive in vivo assessment of breast lesion biochemistry, as an aid for diagnosis [1] and an early indicator of disease response to treatment [2-4]. Effective shimming to achieve a high magnetic field homogeniety over the volume of interest (VOI) is paramount for MRS to achieve sufficient sp...
