A Chemical Study of the Blood of Alligator Mississippiensis by Max Barr Rosenblatt
نویسنده
چکیده
In the course of an investigation concerning perfusion of the alligator heart (Rosenblatt, 1936) it was found desirable to have data available on the normal constituents of the blood of this animal. The only data reported are those of Austin, Sunderman, and Camack (1927) whose work was concerned with the serum electrolyte changes in the alligator with variations in body temperature. Dill and Edwards (1931) have reported an investigation of t.he physicochemical properties of the blood of the crocodile (Crocodiles acutus, Cuvier). On the whole, little detailed information is available concerning the chemical composition of the blood of the lower vertebrates. Furthermore, since the alligator is, in essence, somewhat of a connecting link between the cold blooded vertebrates, on the one hand, and the higher warm blooded animals, on the other, it was thought that an investigation of the constituents of the blood of this animal would be of interest.

Bioprospecting the American Alligator (Alligator mississippiensis) Host Defense Peptidome
Cationic antimicrobial peptides and their therapeutic potential have garnered growing interest because of the proliferation of bacterial resistance. However, the discovery of new antimicrobial peptides from animals has proven challenging due to the limitations associated with conventional biochemical purification and difficulties in predicting active peptides from genomic sequences, if known. A...
متن کاملScaling the Feeding Mechanism of Captive Alligator mississippiensis from Hatchling to Juvenile
Small changes in size can lead to potential performance consequences and may influence an organism's ability to utilize resources in its environment. As the American alligator (Alligator mississippiensis) transitions between neonate, juvenile and adult habitats (ontogenetic niche shifts), there are inevitably dynamic changes in their feeding performance. This study sought to investigate the sca...
متن کاملAntibacterial properties of serum from the American alligator (Alligator mississippiensis).
Treatment of alligator (Alligator mississippiensis) and human serum samples with Escherichia coli resulted in a time- and concentration-dependent inhibition of bacterial proliferation. When inoculated with E. coli, alligator serum exhibited 10-fold lower bacterial survival rates after 1 h than human serum. In addition, the antibacterial spectrum of alligator serum was shown to be much broader t...
متن کاملSlow isotope turnover rates and low discrimination values in the American alligator: implications for interpretation of ectotherm stable isotope data.
Stable isotope analysis has become a standard ecological tool for elucidating feeding relationships of organisms and determining food web structure and connectivity. There remain important questions concerning rates at which stable isotope values are incorporated into tissues (turnover rates) and the change in isotope value between a tissue and a food source (discrimination values). These gaps ...
متن کاملEffects of Leukocyte Extract from the American Alligator (Alligator mississippiensis) on Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria
Treatment of clinical isolates of human pathogenic bacteria, which were known to be resistant to multiple commonly-used antibiotics, with refined leukocyte extracts from the American alligator (Alligator mississippiensis) resulted in a timeand concentration-dependent inhibition of bacterial proliferation. The alligator leukocyte extract exhibited the strongest antibacterial effect on Pseudomona...
