چکیده

This article describes EvergreenHealth’s processes and lessons learned as it evolved toward centralized continuous monitoring of SpO 2 of patients on opioids. The main focus of this report is how EvergreenHealth implemented the first phase of its initiative, which included centralized continuous monitoring of postoperative patients on opioids (regardless of the route of administration) who yielded a score on the STOP-BAG checklist (a slightly altered version of the STOP-BANG) indicating a high risk for sleep apnea. Following the success of this effort, EvergreenHealth now continuously monitors all postoperative patients on opioids. EvergreenHealth is an integrated twohospital healthcare system that serves nearly one million residents in the greater Puget Sound region. The system includes a 318-bed acute care medical center in Kirkland, WA; a network of 10 primary care practices; two urgent care centers; more than two dozen specialty care practices; home care and hospice; and three emergency departments that are open 24/7.

Evaluation and Improvement of Knowledge of Medical staff on Pulse Oximetry in Educational Hospitals

Background: Pulse Oximeter monitoring has become so common over previous decades that in some health care units, blood oxygen level is now considered as the fifth vital sign. However, it seems there is still some lack of knowledge and/or experience among medical staff operating pulse oximeter and interpreting its results. The aim of this study was to investigate and compare the knowledge on Pul...

Capnography monitoring enhances safety of postoperative patient-controlled analgesia.

BACKGROUND Patient-controlled analgesia is associated with potentially fatal opioid-related respiratory depression. Opioids are a well-recognized cause of respiratory depression. However, in the postoperative patient, unrecognized pulmonary disease may lead to retention of carbon dioxide, which is further antagonized by opioids and may lead to life-threatening respiratory depression. Therefore,...

Can we Replace Arterial Blood Gas Analysis by Pulse Oximetry in Neonates with Respiratory Distress Syndrome, who are Treated According to INSURE Protocol?

Neonates with respiratory distress syndrome (RDS), who are treated according to INSURE protocol; require arterial blood gas (ABG) analysis to decide on appropriate management. We conducted this study to investigate the validity of pulse oximetry instead of frequent ABG analysis in the evaluation of these patients. From a total of 193 blood samples obtained from 30 neonates <1500 grams with RDS,...

بررسی سطح دانش کارکنان پزشکی و پیراپزشکی در باره پالس اکسیمتری در بخشهای اتاق عمل و مراقبتهای ویژه بیمارستانهای دانشگاه علوم پزشکی دانشگاه تهران

Background and aim: One of the most important technological advancements for monitoring patients -- especially in anesthesia, recovery, and Intensive Care stages -- is pulse oximetry which can measure the oxygen saturation of arterial blood (spo2) and show hypoxemia before it is clinically observable. Therefore, it is necessary for the individuals who are responsible for treating and taking car...
