Making Decisions on the Release of Gm Crops
نویسنده
چکیده
Much political opportunism, heated rhetoric, and protection of vested interests surround the debate over genetically modified (GM) crops, with extreme claims occurring on all sides. While many of the issues can be addressed by detailed and specific scientific studies, such as those used to assess GM crops for food safety, the ecological implications of release of transgenic crops may be more difficult to assess because knowledge is needed on how the ecological system is likely to evolve in both time and space. Currently the only way to study systems in ‘compressed time’ is by the use of mathematical risk assessment models. In the case of GM crops, mathematical models in which the assumptions and dependencies are explicit can augment expert opinion by better informing decision makers about the risks of gene flow.

Risk, regulation and biotechnology: The case of GM crops
The global regulation of products of biotechnology is increasingly divided. Regulatory decisions for genetically modified (GM) crops in North America are predictable and efficient, with numerous countries in Latin and South America, Australia and Asia following this lead. While it might have been possible to argue that Europe's regulations were at one time based on real concerns about minimizin...
متن کاملCo-existence of agricultural production systems.
Strategies and best practices for the co-existence of GM and non-GM crops need to be developed and implemented with the participation of farmers and other stakeholders. According to the principle of 'subsidiarity', decisions should be made by the lowest authority possible. When applying this concept to the case of GM crops, the affected society should determine their use and management in a reg...
متن کاملGm Crop Cultivation in Ireland: Ecological and Economic Considerations
Like many states in the European Union, Ireland has yet to fully commit itself to genetically modified (GM) crop technology. The general position of the Irish Government is ‘positive but precautionary’. However, with the European-wide de-facto moratorium on commercial production of GM crops now ended, many strategically important decisions regarding the commercial deployment of such crops and t...

BACKGROUND Genetically Modified (GM) crops have been championed as one possible method to improve food security and individual nutritional status in sub Saharan Africa. Understanding and acceptability of GM crop technology to farmers and consumers have not been assessed. We developed a qualitative research study involving farmers as both producers and consumers to gauge the understanding of GM ...
