The Influence of Frequency on Word-initial Obstruent Acquisition in Hexagonal French

چکیده
This study extends a cross-linguistic collaboration on phonological development, which aims to compare production of word-initial obstruents across sets of languages which have comparable consonants that differ in overall frequency or in the frequency with which they occur in analogous sound sequences. By comparing across languages, the influence of language-specific distributional patterns on consonant mastery can be disentangled from the effects of more general phonetic constraints on development. In preparation for extending the comparison to Hexagonal French, we counted type frequencies in French databases and did a preliminary experiment with Frenchacquiring two-year-old children.

Towards a Typology of Word-initial Consonant Clusters: Evidence from the Acquisition of Greek
In this paper, I study the production of consonant clusters by Greek children and examine the consequences of the acquisition data for phonological theory, with particular emphasis on the word-initial position. Using a non-word repetition test, I tested the order of acquisition of wordinitial and word-medial s+obstruent (sT), obstruent-obstruent (TT) and obstruent-sonorant (TR) clusters in 59 c...
متن کاملWord Initial Clusters in Acquisition
In this paper, I study the acquisition of consonant clusters by testing the production of Greek-speaking children. Using a non-word repetition task, I tested the order of acquisition of word initial and word medial s-obstruent (sT), obstruent-obstruent (TT) and obstruent-sonorant (TR) clusters in 59 children. The data presented here shed new light on the nature of word initial clusters that vio...

This study investigates voicing properties of Polish, French, American English and German sonorant consonants, particularly rhotics. The analysis was conducted on four speech databases recorded by professional speakers. The term voicing profiles used in this article refers to the frame by frame voicing status of the sonorants, which was obtained by automatic measurements of fundamental frequenc...
متن کاملRunning Head : Word - Final Clusters The acquisition of word - final clusters in French
The structure of French syllables has long been controversial, particularly with respect to the status of word-final consonants. Some researchers suggest that word-final consonants are syllabified as codas, whereas others propose that these are onsets of empty-headed syllables. This raises questions regarding the nature of syllabic representations in children’s developing French, a topic that h...
