Evidence Base for Strabismus & Amblyopia

چکیده
A review of ophthalmology surgical and non-surgical interventions for intermittent exotropia conducted for the Cochrane Database (Hatt and Gnanaraj, 2006) concluded that the available medical literature consists mainly of retrospective case reviews which are difficult to reliably interpret and analyse. The one randomised trial included found unilateral surgery more effective than bilateral surgery for basic intermittent exotropia. However, across all identified studies, measures of severity and thus criteria for intervention are poorly validated, and there appear to be no reliable natural history data. There is therefore a pressing need for improved measures of severity, a better understanding of the natural history and carefully planned clinical trials of treatment to improve the evidence base for the management of this condition .

Rapid, high-accuracy detection of strabismus and amblyopia using the pediatric vision scanner.
Purpose. The Pediatric Vision Scanner (PVS) detects strabismus by identifying ocular fixation in both eyes simultaneously. This study was undertaken to assess the ability of the PVS to identify patients with amblyopia or strabismus, particularly anisometropic amblyopia with no measurable strabismus. Methods. The PVS test, administered from 40 cm and requiring 2.5 seconds of attention, generated...

EVIDENCE will be presented in this communication to support the hypothesis that anisometropia per se does not produce strabismus, but that, for hypermetropes, the refraction of the better eye is an important factor. Further, the clinical entity of anisometropic amblyopia and its treatment will be discussed. Finally, some comments will be made on optical correction in anisometropia. The case rec...
متن کاملSaccadic intrusions in strabismus.
Fixational eye movements were studied to determine the presence of and to quantify saccadic intrusions under monocular and binocular viewing conditions in subjects with intermittent strabismus, amblyopia without stabismus, or constant strabismus amblyopia. Saccadic intrusions were present under most test conditions in intermittent strabismus, were rarely observed in amblyopia without strabismus...
متن کاملThe base-to-base induced-tropia prism test for detection of amblyopia: a pilot study.
PURPOSE To investigate the accuracy of the base-to-base prism test (BBPT), which entails inducing an esotropia with the use of base-in prisms before each eye, in the diagnosis of amblyopia. METHODS Participants were consecutive patients recruited from a pediatric ophthalmology practice who were able to perform logMAR acuity testing. All participants underwent an orthoptic examination, includi...

Objectives To evaluate the risk factors for strabismus in patients with anisometropia by comparing degree of anisometropia, depth of amblyopia, and binocular visual function in anisometropic patients with and without strabismus. Materials and Methods Sixty-five anisometropic patients older than 5 years with amblyopia in one eye who were followed in the Ankara University Faculty of Medicine, D...
متن کاملStrabismus Amblyopia in Young Cameroonian at their First Visit at Yaounde Hospital Centre-Essos
The management of strabismus in Cameroon is not well developed and the average age of first consultation is beyond the age amblyopia reversal. It is with the aim of improving strabismus management that we undertook this prospective and descriptive study which spanned 11 months. The objective was to describe amblyopia in patients with comitant strabismus at their first visit. Data collected incl...
