Aspergillus terreus Thom a new pathogen that causes foliar blight of potato
نویسنده
چکیده
Foliar blight of potato caused by Aspergillus terreus is reported for the first time. The blight is characterized by a brown leaf apex amounting to 35‒65% of the total leaf surface. The pathogen was identified on the basis of morphological characters and ribosomal DNA sequence data. The fungus produced effuse white colonies, branched hyphae, broom-like conidiophores, and globose accessory conidia measuring 1.5‒2.3 μm in diameter. Koch’s postulates were confirmed by performing pathogenicity test on healthy potato plants.

Potato late blight, caused by the oomycete phytopathogen Phytophthora infestans, is a devastating disease found in potato-growing regions worldwide. Long-term management strategies to control late blight include the incorporation of host resistance to predominant strains. However, due to rapid genetic changes within pathogen populations, rapid and recurring identification and integration of nov...

متن کاملContrasting Potato Foliage and Tuber Defense Mechanisms against the Late Blight Pathogen Phytophthora infestans
The late blight pathogen Phytophthora infestans can attack both potato foliage and tubers. When inoculated with P. infestans, foliage of nontransformed 'Russet Burbank' (WT) develops late blight disease while that of transgenic 'Russet Burbank' line SP2211 (+RB) does not. We compared the foliar transcriptome responses of these two lines to P. infestans inoculation using an RNA-seq approach. A t...

Host plant resistance is an important component to the management of potato late blight, Phytophthora infestans (Mont.) de Bary. Assessment of potato lines (Solarium tuberosum L.) with various levels of resistance to P. infestans (US8, A2 genotype) were evaluated in field trials, greenhouse controlled environment chambers and inoculated tuber reactions. Five lines (AWN86514-2, B0692-4, B0718-3,...

Aspergillus terreus is an uncommon but emerging fungal pathogen, which causes lethal infections that are often refractory to amphotericin B (AmB). In comparison to Aspergillus fumigatus, A. terreus was resistant to the in vitro fungicidal effects of safely achievable concentrations of AmB. These in vitro findings correlated directly with resistance of A. terreus to AmB in experimental invasive ...
