چکیده

In the realm of causativization, the traditional tension between explaining crosslinguistic variation while maintaining that a phenomenon has a common universal source can be stated specifically as follows: how can we explain the fact that if a certain type of verb causativizes in both languages A and B, the derived predicate usually has the same syntactic and semantic properties, while also accounting for the fact that the distribution of causativization in A and B can differ radically. The data in (1) and (2) illustrate the problem. The causativized unaccusatives in (1) pull us towards saying that causative predicates are derived in a unified way crosslinguistically: the forms in (1a-c) have essentially the same syntactic and semantic properties. However, when we examine causativization outside unaccusatives, a unified account becomes hard to maintain since in English causativization is limited to unaccusatives while in Finnish and in Japanese agentive verbs causativize as well, as is shown in (2):1

Causation a Unified Framework for the Social Sciences

This paper offers four main arguments about the nature of causation in the social sciences. First, contrary to most recent work, I argue that there is a unitary conception of causation: a cause raises the probability of an event. This understanding of causation, borrowed from but not wedded to Bayesian inference, provides common semantic ground on which to base a reconstruction of causation. I ...

Can Counterfactuals Solve the Exclusion Problem?

A quite popular approach to solving the Causal Exclusion Problem is to adopt a counterfactual theory of causation. In this paper, I distinguish three versions of the Causal Exclusion Argument. I argue that the counterfactualist approach can block the first two exclusion arguments, because the Causal Inheritance Principle and the Upward Causation Principle upon which the two arguments are based ...

Russell, Causation, Determinism

Two arguments due to Russell are examined, and found to show that the notion of causation as full determination doesn’t mesh easily with deterministic global physics and the distinction between effective and ineffective strategies. But a local notion of causation as involving a certain kind of counterfactual dependence is, I argue, compatible with Russell’s conclusions. I defend it from a resur...

Lead exposure and children's intelligence: do low levels of lead in blood cause mental deficit?

OBJECTIVE It has come to be generally accepted that low levels of lead exposure may result in mental deficit. This causal inference is based on claimed time precedence of the lead exposure and on biological plausibility. The objective of this study is to argue that mental deficit causes pica which causes lead exposure (i.e. to support the theory of reverse causation). METHODOLOGY The literatu...
