چکیده

The paper compares how feedback is expressed via speech and head movements in comparable corpora of first encounters in three Nordic languages: Danish, Finnish and Swedish. The three corpora have been collected following common guidelines, and they have been annotated according to the same scheme in the NOMCO project. The results of the comparison show that in this data the most frequent feedback-related head movement is Nod in all three languages. Two types of Nods were distinguished in all corpora: Downnods and Up-nods; the participants from the three countries use Downand Up-nods with different frequency. In particular, Danes use Down-nods more frequently than Finns and Swedes, while Swedes use Up-nods more frequently than Finns and Danes. Finally, Finns use more often single Nods than repeated Nods, differing from the Swedish and Danish participants. The differences in the frequency of both Down-nods and Up-Nods in the Danish, Finnish and Swedish interactions are interesting given that Nordic countries are not only geographically near, but are also considered to be very similar culturally. Finally, a comparison of feedbackrelated words in the Danish and Swedish corpora shows that Swedes and Danes use common feedback words corresponding to yes and no with similar frequency.

Comparative Study of Graduate Students’ Self-Perceived Needs for Written Feedback and Supervisors’ Perceptions

This study was an attempt to examine the supervisors’ and graduate students’ needs for written feedback on thesis/dissertation and juxtaposed them to see how each group views feedback. A mixed-method design was employed to collect the data. Questionnaires and interviews were deployed to collect the data from 132 graduate TEFL students and 37 supervisors from 10 Iranian Universities. Results ind...

Equality and Convergence in the Nordic Societies in the Long Run: Europe and Other Comparative Mirrors

In this paper we analyze Nordic long-run economic performance and wages by focusing on convergence (or divergence) over time among the Nordic countries and whether they converged toward the economic leaders, such as Europe, UK and USA, in particular time periods. Our first comparative mirror was the development of real GDP per capita from the early 19 century to 2010 – it seems that there was a...

Assessment of the conventional control algorithms and proposing a modified displacement feedback control for performance-based design of structures

An enhanced displacement feedback structural control procedure is presented for performance-based design in this paper. At first, a comparative study is implemented assessing three most common active control algorithms including state, acceleration, and displacement feedback controls. The advantage of the displacement feedback algorithm for active control of structures against earthquakes is de...

The Comparative Effect of Direct and Indirect Corrective Feedback in Process-Based Vs. Product-Based Writing Instruction on EFL Learners` Writing Performance

This study attempted to systematically inspect the impact of direct and indirect corrective feedbacks on the writing ability of EFL learners when using product/process based instructions. To do so, 110 female EFL learners, between the ages of 15 and 18, were randomly assigned into four experimental groups to receive four different kinds of treatments, namely product-based instruction with direc...
