چکیده

Phonological patterns often have phonetic bases. But whether phonetic substance should be encoded in synchronic phonological grammar is controversial. We aim to test the synchronic relevance of phonetics by investigating native Mandarin speakers’ applications of two exceptionless tone sandhi processes to novel words: the contour reduction 213E21/_T (Tl213), which has a clear phonetic motivation, and the perceptually neutralising 213E35/_213, whose phonetic motivation is less clear. In two experiments, Mandarin subjects were asked to produce two individual monosyllables together as two different types of novel disyllabic words. Results show that speakers apply the 213E21 sandhi with greater accuracy than the 213E35 sandhi in novel words, indicating a synchronic bias against the phonetically less motivated pattern. We also show that lexical frequency is relevant to the application of the sandhis to novel words, but cannot account alone for the low sandhi accuracy of 213E35.

Contextual Variability of Third-Tone Sandhi in Taiwan Mandarin

This study investigates the phonetic property of Third-Tone Sandhi in Taiwan Mandarin and the effects of contextual variability. The goal of this study is to provide empirical evidence for the description of Tone 2 (T2) and Tone 3 (T3) in Taiwan Mandarin and further to account for the phonetic features of T2 and T3 in Third-Tone Sandhi Contexts. The results show that isolated T2 is different fr...

Production of lexical tones by Southern Min-Mandarin bilinguals

This is a preliminary study examining the tonal production of L1 Taiwanese Southern Min (TSM) speakers who are also fluent in Mandarin. Both languages have tone sandhi rules in which certain lexical tones are neutralized in non-XP-final positions. Disyllabic Mandarin and TSM words with different tonal combinations in frame sentences were examined. The results suggest that Mandarin Tone 1, Tone ...

Depth of phonological recoding in short-term memory.

In testing the hypothesis that surface phonetic form is included in short-term memory (STM) representation, the tone sandhi phenomenon in Mandarin Chinese was exploited, and, as a prerequisite, the hypothesis that tonal similarity affects STM of verbal material in a tone language was also tested. In Experiment 1, subjects recalled visually presented sequences of seven monosyllabic Chinese morph...

Mandarin Tone 2 Coarticulation: Phonetic or phonological?

Tone processes in Chinese languages can be identified as phonological or phonetic. In the literature, this distinction is often made by referring to them as either tone sandhi (phonological) or tonal coarticulation (phonetic). However, while it is unchallenged that certain processes (e.g. Standard Mandarin Tone 3 Sandhi) belong to the phonological camp, some other tone processes that are consid...
