Spiderweb deformation induced by electrostatically charged insects

چکیده
Capture success of spider webs has been associated with their microstructure, ornamentation, and wind-induced vibrations. Indirect evidence suggests that statically charged objects can attract silk thread, but web deformations induced by charged insects have not yet been described. Here, we show under laboratory conditions that electrostatically charged honeybees, green bottle flies, fruit flies, aphids, and also water drops falling near webs of cross-spiders (Araneus diadematus) induce rapid thread deformation that enhances the likelihood of physical contact, and thus of prey capture.

Spiderweb honeycombs
Small and large deformation in-plane elastic response of a new class of hierarchical fractal-like honeycombs inspired by the topology of the ''spiderweb'' were investigated through analytical modeling, detailed numerical simulations, and mechanical testing. Small deformation elasticity results show that the isotropic in-plane elastic moduli (Young's modulus and Poisson's ratio) of the structure...

A new class of hierarchical fractal-like honeycombs inspired by the topology of the “spiderweb” were introduced and their small and large deformations were investigated analytically, numerically, and experimentally. Small deformation elasticity results show that the isotropic in-plane elastic moduli (Young’s modulus and Poisson’s ratio) of the structures can be controlled over several orders of...
متن کاملPull-in behavior of a bio-mass sensor based on an electrostatically actuated cantilevered CNT with consideration of rippling effect
This paper examines the pull-in behavior of a bio-mass sensor with a cantilevered CNT actuated electrostatically by considering rippling deformation. Although this phenomenon can remarkably change the behavior of CNT, its effect on the performance of a CNT-based mass sensor has not been investigated thus far. This investigation is based on modified Euler-Bernoulli beam theory and rippling effec...
متن کاملSilver nanoparticle-human hemoglobin interface: time evolution of the corona formation and interaction phenomenon
In this paper, we have used spectroscopic and electron microscopic analysis to monitor the time evolution of the silver nanoparticles (Ag NP)-human hemoglobin (Hb) corona formation and to characterize the interaction of the Ag NPs with Hb. The time constants for surface plasmon resonance binding and reorganization are found to be 9.51 and 118.48 min, respectively. The drop of surface charge and...
متن کاملElectrostatically Driven Creep in Viscoelastic Dielectric Elastomers
We utilize a nonlinear, dynamic finite element model coupled with a finite deformation viscoelastic constitutive law to study the inhomogeneous deformation and instabilities resulting from the application of a constant voltage to dielectric elastomers. The constant voltage loading is used to study electrostatically driven creep and the resulting electromechanical instabilities for two different...
