چکیده

In this article, we propose a mechanical rubbing method to eliminate the optical bounce and decrease the response time of homeotropic liquid crystal (LC) cells with sputtered silicon dioxide alignment films. After gently rubbing the inorganic alignment film (sputtered silicon oxide, SiO2), the decreasing polar anchoring energy results in slightly smaller pretilt angle which gives LC a toppling direction to shorten the transition time while LC cell is applied by an external electric field. The results of our work show that this rubbing remedy can suppress the optical bounce. This simple and efficient surface treatment could be applied to liquid crystal on silicon (LCOS) technique for high resolution microdisplays and portable electronic products. 2011 Elsevier B.V. Homeotropic alignment of lyotropic chromonic liquid crystals using noncovalent interactions.

We report on the homeotropic alignment of lyotropic chromonic liquid crystals (LCLCs). Homeotropic anchoring of LCLCs is difficult to achieve, and this challenge has limited development of applications for LCLCs. In this work, homeotropic alignment is achieved using noncovalent interactions between the LCLC molecules and various alignment layers including graphene, parylene films, poly(methyl m...

Langmuir Blodgett films of arachidic acid and N4 molecules: characterization and use in homeotropic alignment of N4

We study the behavior of a mixed Langmuir monolayer consisting of a fatty acid and a nematic liquid crystal. We demonstrate that the mixed monolayer successfully transfers as a Langmuir-Blodgett film and characterize the transferred film using UV spectroscopy. An important application of Langmuir-Blodgett films is in the alignment of liquid crystals for electro-optical applications, such as dis...

Fabrication of Surface-Stabilized Ferroelectric Liquid Crystal Display with Stripe-Shaped Domain Structure

A uniform stripe-shaped domain (SSD) structure was obtained in the initial ferroelectric liquid crystal (FLC) alignment by rubbing the polyimide films doped with silicon naphthalocyanine. Such a surface-stabilized FLC cell exhibits a high contrast ratio and excellent bistability. Atomic force microscope images and pretilt angle measurement results demonstrated that the rubbing-induced polishing...

Surface Wetting Characteristics of Rubbed Polyimide Thin Films

Amide and imide based polymers are a catalogue of versatile materials that have a wide range of applications from scientific interests to commercial products because of their great thermal stability, excellent electric properties, highly mechanical strength, and superior chemical resistance (Sroog, 1976). In a thin film form, polyimides have been found to have many important uses in optoelectro...

Effects of confinement, surface-induced orientations and strain on dynamical behaviors of bacteria in thin liquid crystalline films.

We report on the organization and dynamics of bacteria (Proteus mirabilis) dispersed within lyotropic liquid crystal (LC) films confined by pairs of surfaces that induce homeotropic (perpendicular) or hybrid (homeotropic and parallel orientations at each surface) anchoring of the LC. By using motile vegetative bacteria (3 µm in length) and homeotropically aligned LC films with thicknesses that ...
