چکیده

A technique is described which allows recording of multi-fiber discharge and single-unit activity from intact peripheral nerves of awake human subjects. A tungsten electrode with a tip diameter of 5-15 p was driven manually through skin, subcutaneous tissues and nerve sheath. From many recording sites in mixed nerve trunks neural impulses with an amplitude of 40 .uv were recorded in response to peripheral mechanical stimuli. It was possible to judge when afferent nerve fibers of cutaneous origin lay close to the electrode tip by the quality of the insertion paresthesias and the type of peripheral stimuli required to induce afferent responses. Examples are presented of fast and slowly adapting mass discharge induced by mechanical stimuli on glabrous and nonglabrous skin areas. When single-unit activity was discriminated it was often possible to determine the site of the cutaneous end organ, the discharge characteristics of the unit, and the conduction velocity of the nerve fiber. Ten such single-unit recordings are described.

Evidence for strong synaptic coupling between single tactile afferents from the sole of the foot and motoneurons supplying leg muscles.

It has been known for some time that populations of cutaneous and muscle afferents can provide short-latency facilitation of motoneuron pools. Recently, it has been shown that the input from individual low-threshold mechanoreceptors in the glabrous skin of the hand can modulate ongoing activity in muscles acting on the fingers via spinally mediated pathways. We have extended this work to examin...

Cutaneous afferents provide information about knee joint movements in humans.

1. Neurophysiological evidence that afferent information from skin receptors is important for proprioception has been gathered mainly in experiments relating to the human hand and finger joints. To investigate if proprioceptive information is also provided by skin mechanoreceptor afferents from skin areas related to large joints of postural importance, microneurography recordings were obtained ...

Responses of Trigeminal Ganglion Neurons during Natural Whisking Behaviors in the Awake Rat

Rats use their whiskers to locate and discriminate tactile features of their environment. Mechanoreceptors surrounding each whisker encode and transmit sensory information from the environment to the brain via afferents whose cell bodies lie in the trigeminal ganglion (Vg). These afferents are classified as rapidly (RA) or slowly (SA) adapting by their response to stimulation. The activity of t...

Clustering of slowly adapting type II mechanoreceptors in human peripheral nerve and skin.

The intrafascicular organization of human peripheral nerves was studied with percutaneous microneurography in the median, radial and peroneal nerves with one-surface or two-surface thin diameter concentric needle electrodes. Data from 33 recording sites containing 47 slowly adapting type II (SAII) units were analysed. At many sites two, sometimes even three, neighbouring SAII units were recorde...

Short-latency auditory projection to the frontal telencephalon of the pigeon.

An auditory projection to the frontolateral telencephalon of birds, originally described by Iljitschew, is confirmed for the pigeon. Potentials evoked by acoustic stimuli were recorded from the neostriatum frontale closely surrounding the nucleus basalis, in anesthetized and awake subjects. The latency of these responses was short (5 to 8 ms) compared to that of responses recorded from the orth...
