Abstract: Traditionally, computer graphics has favored the parametric over the implicit surface because the parametric is easier to render. lmplicit representations, however, have natural advantages in surface design, particularly in their ability to express concisely constraints that a surface must obey; this paper discusses this advantage, emphasizing the use of distance as a constraint. Unfortunately, the implicit representation of surfaces does pose problems for certain computer graphics applications, particularly rendering and texturing. This paper introduces a number of new techniques to overcome these difficulties.
