[Para-aminosalicylic acid in the treatment of tuberculosis].
نویسنده
چکیده
Although it is only two and a half years ago since the first report was published on the antitubercular activity of para-amiiosalicylic acid (PAS), there is already quite a considerable literature on the subject. Much of it is, however, fragmentary and it has appeared in a wide variety of journals, but apart from the early publications of the Swedish workers it has all been written in English. Many of these papers deal with only a limited aspect of the subject and in some respects experimental reports have been conflicting. This has been due mainly to scarcity of the drug in the past and to varying degrees of purity of the materials available for the earlier experiments. Now that supplies are becoming more freely available and a more satisfactory product is being offered by the various manufacturers, there is likely to be greater interest in the drug and a greater amount of research work undertaken by clinicians and others concerned with the chemotherapy of tuberculosis. The purpose of this paper is therefore to review the work that has already been done, to summarize our present knowledge of the drug and to give some indication of the work that is ahead. In preparing this paper reference has been made to every previous publication of any importance whatsoever, and whose existence it has been possible to trace.

Mechanisms involved in the resistance of Mycobacterium tuberculosis to para-aminosalicylic acid.
That para-aminobenzoic acid antagonizes competitively the inhibitory effect of paraaminosalicylic acid on the growth of Mycobacterium tuberculosis is well known. In a previous communication (Hedgecock, 1956) it was reported that inhibition of M. tuberculosis (strain H37Rv) by para-aminosalicylic acid was reversed noncompetitively by methionine and biotin when the concentration of the inhibitor ...

The treatment of tuberculosis by chemotherapy is complicated due to multiple drug prescriptions, long treatment duration, and adverse side effects. We report here for the first time an in vitro therapeutic effect of nanocomposites based on para-aminosalicylic acid with zinc layered hydroxide (PAS-ZLH) and zinc-aluminum layered double hydroxides (PAS-Zn/Al LDH), against mycobacteria, Gram-positi...

The development of resistant strains of tubercle organisms Is the main problem in using continuous antimicrobial therapy in the treatment of tuberculosis. Streptomycin and isonicotinic acid hydrazide have both been found to have a bactericidal action on tubercle organisms in the laboratory; the action of streptomycin varies directly with the concentration of the drug while the action of the iso...

Courses of antituberculous chemotherapy are more prolonged than ever, and the problem of the unpleasant side effects of the administration of para-aminosalicylic acid (PAS) harasses both patient and physician for longer periods of time. Clinicians who manage tuberculosis are quite familiar with the difficulties entailed in keeping an appreciable number of their patients on an uninterrupted, pro...

Para-aminosalicylic acid (PAS), an approved drug for treatment of tuberculosis, is a promising therapeutic agent for treatment of manganese (Mn)-induced parkinsonian syndromes. Lack of a quantifying method, however, has hindered the clinical evaluation of its efficacy and there upon new drug development. This study was aimed at developing a simple and effective method to quantify PAS and its ma...
