Multidecadal Trend of Basin-Scale Evapotranspiration Estimated Using AVHRR Data in the Krishna River Basin, India

چکیده
Evapotranspiration (ET) is one of the most critical components of terrestrial water balance. Estimating reliable ET across a large region is, however, difficult due to the limited number of ground monitoring stations and the heterogeneous land surface conditions. In this work, spatially distributed monthly ET estimates in the Krishna River Basin, India, were derived using Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) data and the ground monitoring data sets from local meteorological stations for the 1983 to 2001 time period. A modified Penman–Monteith model with biome-specific canopy conductance was used to estimate the 8-km AVHRR ET. Ground validation was conducted using the lysimeter measurements and Landsatand MODIS-based ET estimates from the same model aggregated to the AVHRR scale. The difference between the lysimeter measurements and 30-m Landsat estimates was only 5.3%, and the mean difference between the aggregated Landsat ET and the AVHRR ET estimates was <14%. The AVHRR ET estimates of this study showed that the basin-average ET increased continuously at the mean rate of 4.97 mm yr−1 yr−1 in the Krishna River Basin during 1983 to 2001. The subbasin-scale ET analyses showed an increasing trend of ET in the upstream subbasins, where irrigation development was active in the 1980s, compared with the other subbasins. Further sensitivity analyses based on land-use information showed that the increased ET in the basin is mainly due to the development of irrigation that occurred during the study period.

Impact of Spatial Scale on Remotely Sensed Evapotranspiration Estimates from Heterogeneous Land Surfaces
Remote sensing can provide estimates of spatially distributed actual evapotranspiration (ET) at different spatial scales. Methods that combine remotely sensed observations with other ground-based information on land and atmospheric properties usually allow improved estimates of spatially distributed evapotranspiration (ET) than when remotely sensed data are used alone. Spatial resolution of rem...
متن کاملFuture climate change impact on hydrological regime of river basin using SWAT model
Hydrological components in a river basin can get adversely affected by climate change in coming future. Manipur River basin lies in the extreme northeast region of India nestled in the lesser Himalayan ranges and it is under severe pressure from anthropogenic and natural factors. Basin is un-gauged as it lies in remote location and suffering from large data scarcity. This paper explores the imp...
متن کاملEvaluation of Groundwater Chemistry of a Central Kerala River Basin, India using Multivariate Analysis
Statistical processing of data was necessary to arrive at a reasonable conclusion regarding the chemical behavior of groundwater in a river basin. Multivariate analysis was done to elucidate the groundwater chemistry of a Central Kerala River basin. Hydrochemical parameters like EC, pH, TDS, TH, Ca, Mg, Na, K, Cl, F, HCO 3 +CO 3 , SO 4 , total Fe were estimated in the pre- monsoon and post-mons...
متن کاملMapping Flooded Rice Paddies Using Time Series of MODIS Imagery in the Krishna River Basin, India
Rice is one of the major crops cultivated predominantly in flooded paddies, thus a large amount of water is consumed during its growing season. Accurate paddy rice maps are therefore important inputs for improved estimates of actual evapotranspiration in the agricultural landscape. The main objective of this study was to obtain flooded paddy rice maps using multi-temporal images of Moderate Res...

In this study, ETo was calculated using FAO-56 Penman Monteith method. Lag-1 autocorrelation coefficient was performed to detect the presence of serially correlation in data series. Mann-Kendall (MK) or Modified Mann Kendall (MMK) and Spearman’s rho test were applied to detect the trend in annual and monthly ETo at 8 districts over 49 years (1960–2008) in the Soenath river basin, Chhattisgarh (...
