Tick in the outer ear canal: Two case reports

چکیده
Although cases of foreign bodies in the outer ear canal are common in Ear, Nose and Throat clinics, cases of ticks in the outer ear canal are comparatively rare[1,2]. As of the 2000s, ticks have come to prominence as transmitters to humans of several diseases with poor prognosis, and particularly crimean congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF). Ticks are non-flying and non-jumping ectoparasites that feed on blood and can infect all terrestrial vertebrates[3]. Other associated significant systemic diseases apart from CCHF are Lyme disease (Borrelia burgdorferi), tularemia (Francisella tularensis), typhus (Rikettsia conorii) and Q fever (Coxiella burnetii)[4]. Transmission of CCHF is directly proportional to the length of time the tick remains in the body, and mortality ranges between 3% and 30%[5]. The purpose of this paper was to discuss methods of removing ticks that enter the outer ear canal and what can be done at follow-up.

Facial nerve paralysis due to intra-aural Hyalomma tick infestation.
We present the case of a 33 year-old man from a village of the north-eastern part of central Anatolia admitted to the otolaryngology department of Yeditepe University Hospital with right facial asymmetry and pain on the right ear. A tick of the genus Hyalomma was observed in the external auditory canal of the right ear and it was removed with fine cup forceps under otomicroscopy. We are of the ...
متن کاملA Case of Engorged Female Hard Tick in the External Auditory Canal of an Infant
An oval-shaped mass with a smooth surface was found in the ear canal of a 22-month-old male infant. Although the mass appeared to be almost entirely blocking the ear canal, it was successfully removed under a surgical microscope without general anesthesia at the outpatient department. Under an optical microscope with hematoxylin and eosin staining, the specimen was observed to have a cuticle wi...
متن کاملAn unusual case of tick exposure: tick in the external auditory canal.
Ticks can carry and transmit numerous pathogens; most of these exist in our country, for example Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever (CCHF), rickettsial diseases, tularemia, Q fever, Lyme disease and anaplasmosis (1, 2). Ticks are found rarely in the external auditory canal and may lead to complications such as tick paralysis (2). In this case report, we aimed to emphasise the importance of carefu...
متن کاملFirst Branchial Cleft Fistula Associated with External Auditory Canal Stenosis and Middle Ear Cholesteatoma
Introduction: First branchial cleft anomalies manifest with duplication of the external auditory canal. Case Report: This report features a rare case of microtia and congenital middle ear and canal cholesteatoma with first branchial fistula. External auditory canal stenosis was complicated by middle ear and external canal cholesteatoma, but branchial fistula, opening in the zygomatic root and...
متن کاملOuter ear canal infection with Rhabditis sp. nematodes in a human.
Here we report the first human case of an outer ear canal infection with a free-living nematode of the genus Rhabditis. Otomicroscopy revealed viable worms in the outer ear canal of a patient suffering from chronic otorrhea and hearing loss. The nematode was identified by microscopy and internal transcribed spacer (ITS)-PCR.
