چکیده

The role played by river networks in regional and global carbon (C) budgets is receiving increasing attention. Despite the potential of radiocarbon measurements (ΔC) to elucidate sources and cycling of different riverine C pools, there remain large regions for which no data are available and no comprehensive attempts to synthesize the available information and examine global patterns in the C content of different riverine C pools. Here we present new C data on particulate and dissolved organic C (POC and DOC) from six river basins in tropical and subtropical Africa and compiled >1400 literature ΔC data and ancillary parameters from rivers globally. Our analysis reveals a consistent pattern whereby POC is progressively older in systems carrying higher sediment loads, coinciding with a lower organic carbon content. At the global scale, this pattern leads to a proposed global median ΔC signature of 203‰, corresponding to an age of ~1800 years B.P. For DOC exported to the coastal zone, we predict a modern (decadal) age (ΔC =+22 to +46‰), and paired data sets confirm that riverine DOC is generally more recent in origin than POC—in contrast to the situation in ocean environments. Weathering regimes complicate the interpretation of C ages of dissolved inorganic carbon, but the available data favor the hypothesis that in most cases, more recent organic C is preferentially mineralized.

Millennial-aged organic carbon subsidies to a modern river food web.

Recent studies indicate that highly aged material is a major component of organic matter transported by most rivers. However, few studies have used natural 14C to trace the potential entry of this aged material into modern river food webs. Here we use natural abundance 14C, 13C, and deuterium (2H) to trace the contribution of aged and contemporary organic matter to an important group of consume...

Sedimentology of the of Zayandeh-Rood River alluvial Terraces and the sediment source identification

In this research, three alluvial Terraces that are located in pathway of Zayandeh-Rood River are studied. The river starts from Bakhtiayri Zardkoh mountain and after through Esfahan city ends to Gawkhony lake. Age of alluvial terraces is younger in upstream than downstream and the height level of the terraces decrease relative to current river bed toward the downstream. The terraces were sample...

The Effect of Paved Roads on Organic Carbon Content of Soil in Taham Dam Basin

Background; Contamination of water and soil through non-point sources such as road runoff causes environmental concern. The aim of this study is to determine the effect of Zanjan – Chavarzagh road on the total organic carbon (TOC) content of sediments in tributaries and the river that lead to Taham Lake. Methods; In tributaries and the river 69 soil and sediment samples were taken and the Tota...

Amazon River enhances diazotrophy and carbon sequestration in the tropical North Atlantic Ocean.

The fresh water discharged by large rivers such as the Amazon is transported hundreds to thousands of kilometers away from the coast by surface plumes. The nutrients delivered by these river plumes contribute to enhanced primary production in the ocean, and the sinking flux of this new production results in carbon sequestration. Here, we report that the Amazon River plume supports N(2) fixation...
