FECAVA LECTURE Canine immune-mediated polyarthritis

چکیده
Immune-mediated polyarthritides (PA) are defined by synovial inflammation, failure to identify a microbial aetiology and response to immunosuppressive therapy. These diseases have common immunopathogenic features and may be subdivided into erosive (e.g., rheumatoid arthritis [RA]) and non-erosive forms (e.g., “idiopathic“ polyarthritis (IPA) type I; type II associated with infectious disease; type III with gastrointestinal disease; type IV with neoplasia; vaccination reactions, systemic lupus erythematosus, and others). Typical clinical findings are a stiff gait, varying degrees of lameness, shifting leg lameness, fever, and bilaterally symmetrical swollen painful joints. Diagnosis is based on radiographs, arthrocentesis and synovial fluid analysis of several joints. Blood and urine analyses, and diagnostic imaging of thorax and abdomen are helpful in identification or exclusion of underlying diseases. Further diagnostic testing is recommended in certain cases such as serology / PCR testing for infectious diseases, CSF analysis, cytology of lymph nodes, etc. In IPA II – IV treatment is primarily directed against the underlying disease. If RA, IPA I or a vaccination reaction is suspected analgesics and often doxycycline are given initially. In most cases of IPA I and RA immunosuppressive therapy with prednisolone (and sometimes other immunosuppressive agents) is necessary. IPA type I has a favourable prognosis and cure is possible, but the recurrence rate is high. Prognosis for vaccination reactions and IPA II – IV is good if the underlying disease can be treated. Use of serum C-reactive protein as an early marker of inflammatory activity in canine type II immune-mediated polyarthritis: case report
BACKGROUND Monitoring systemic inflammatory activity during steroid therapy of canine immune-mediated polyarthritis (IMPA) is difficult and mainly relies on clinical signs. CASE PRESENTATION Canine serum C-reactive protein (CRP) was measured serially and blinded during a 27-week follow-up period of a case of Anaplasma phagocytophilia induced type II immune-mediated polyarthritis. CONCLUSION...
متن کاملCanine inflammatory liver disease – Lecture
Canine inflammatory liver disease – Lecture I Chronic active hepatitis (CAH) is the descriptive diagnostic terminology for the an ongoing inflammatory disease of the liver in dogs. This is thought to result predominantly from a complex immune mediated pathogenesis with concurrent factors relating to the initiation and severity of the disease. A similar/overlapping pathophysiologic process is hy...
متن کاملMultiple splenic infarctions in a dog with immune-mediated hemolytic anemia: therapeutic implications
Background: Splenic infarction (SI) is a rare clinical entity seldom encountered in veterinary medicine. Its most frequent causes include thromboembolic status, splenomegaly, and cardiac disease. Although thrombotic elements from the circulation provide the most common context for thromboembolic SIs, immune-mediated hemolytic anemia (IMHA) has not been reported as an underlying...

Thirty two domestic dogs with naturally occurring polyarthritis were investigated to determine the contribution of autoimmunity in the pathological mechanisms. Comparisons were made with canine infective arthritis (12 dogs), osteoarthritis (32), and osteoarthritis secondary to rupture of the cranial cruciate ligament (19). Rheumatoid factors, immune complexes, and complement fixation (C1q bindi...

TICKBORNE diseases are regionally common problems in dogs, with almost undetectable to fatal clinical manifestations, including fever, weakness, icterus, epistaxis and lameness (May and others 1990, Greig and others 1996, Harrus and others 1997, Pappalardo and others 1997, Greene and Breitschwerdt 1998, Foley and others 2001). In California, important tickborne diseases include Rocky Mountain s...
