چکیده
During the past several years, the use of computer programs in the analysis of protein and DNA sequences has become commonplace. In all but the simplest procedures, the ability to critically review the results obtained with computer methods requires i) a basic knowledge of the algorithms employed (and the assumptions upon which they are based), ii) an awareness of the capabilities and limitations of the particular program that implements an algorithm, and iii) some familiarity with probability and statistics. We describe a number of computer methods that have been applied to the analysis of apolipoprotein sequences. We discuss the suitability of these methods for particular problems, how the choice of initial "parameters" can affect the results, and what the results can tell us about protein or gene sequences. We also identify some outstanding problems of apolipoprotein sequence analysis where further work is needed. -Bopski, M. S., M. Freeman, N. A. Elshourbagy, J. M. Taylor, and J. I. Gordon. Amino acid sequences of two proline-rich bactenecins. Antimicrobial peptides of bovine neutrophils.
Bactenecins are highly cationic polypeptides of the large granules of bovine neutrophils, exerting in vitro a potent antimicrobial activity. Two bactenecins, with an approximate molecular weight of 7000 and 5000, called Bac7 and Bac5, are characterized by a high content of proline (greater than 45%) and arginine (greater than 23%) residues. Their complete amino acid sequences were determined by...

متن کاملEvolution of Repeated Sequence Arrays in the D - Loop Region of Bat Mitochondrial DNA Gerald
Analysis of mitochondrial DNA control region sequences from 41 species of bats representing 11 families revealed that repeated sequence arrays near the tRNA-Pro gene are present in all vespertilionine bats. Across 18 species tandem repeats varied in size from 78 to 85 bp and contained two to nine repeats. Heteroplasmy ranged from 15% to 63%. Fewer repeats among heteroplasmic than homoplasmic in...
متن کاملThe polymorphism in MUC1 gene in Nelore cattle.
MUC1 is a transmembrane glycoprotein expressed on the apical surfaces of the uterine epithelial tissue with predicted functions in protection and cell-cell adhesion. These properties are closely related with the repetitive region [variable number of tandem repeats (VNTR)] of the extracellullar domain and with the O-glycosylation in their serine and threonine residues. This study describes a pol...
