The Forecast Quality of Cboe Implied Volatility Indexes
نویسندگان
چکیده
We examine the forecast quality of Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE) implied volatility indexes based on the Nasdaq 100 and Standard and Poor’s 100 and 500 stock indexes. We find that the forecast quality of CBOE implied volatilities for the S&P 100 (VXO) and S&P 500 (VIX) has improved since 1995. Implied volatilities for the Nasdaq 100 (VXN) appear to provide even higher quality forecasts of future volatility. We further find that attenuation biases induced by the econometric problem of errors in variables appear to have largely disappeared from CBOE volatility index data since 1995. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A Tale of Two Indices
In 1993, the Chicago Board of Options Exchange (CBOE) introduced the COBE Volatility Index (VIX). This index has become the de facto benchmark for stock market volatility. On September 22, 2003, the CBOE revamped the definition and calculation of the VIX, and back-calculated the new VIX up to 1990 based on historical option prices. The CBOE is also planning to launch futures and options on the ...

If returns on two assets share common volatility components, the prices of options on the assets should be interdependent and the implied volatility spread should mean revert. We first demonstrate, using the canonical correlation method, that there is a common component among the volatilities of the returns on S&P 100 and S&P 500 indexes. We then exploit this commonality by trading on the volat...
متن کاملThe quality of market volatility forecasts implied by S&P 100 index option prices
This study examines the performance of the S&P 100 implied volatility as a forecast of future stock market volatility. The results indicate that the implied volatility is an upward biased forecast, but also that it contains relevant information regarding future volatility. The implied volatility dominates the historical volatility rate in terms of ex ante forecasting power, and its forecast err...
متن کاملVolatility Indices and State-preference Pricing
This paper is the first to use a state-preference pricing approach with BlackScholes analytic second derivatives to develop a forward-looking volatility index (FIX), as a forecast of the next 30-day market risk-neutral volatility. Using S&P 500 index (SPX) option prices from 1996 to 2010, we find that FIX is 99% correlated with the current CBOE volatility index (VIX) and it is a better estimato...
متن کاملThe information content of implied volatility indexes for forecasting volatility and market risk
In this paper, we assess the efficiency, information content and unbiasedness of volatility forecasts based on the VIX/VXN implied volatility indexes, RiskMetrics and GARCHtype models at the 5-, 10and 22-day time horizon. Our empirical application focuses on the S&P100 and NASDAQ100 indexes. We also deal with the information content of the competing volatility forecasts in a market risk (VaR ty...
