The Orientation of Untrained Pigeons: a Dichotomy in the Homing Process
نویسنده
چکیده
INTRODUCTION It had been shown (Matthews, 19516) that reasonably accurate orientation and homing could be obtained with young pigeons after a minimal training up to 25 miles. Recently Kramer & St Paul (1952) and Kramer (1953) have obtained similar results with older pigeons trained up to 10 miles only. Training thus appeared to be rather less essential than had been supposed, and to investigate this further, experiments with completely untrained young pigeons were required.

Orientation by untrained pigeons requires the sun.
Untrained homing pigeons released on sunny days oriented homeward regardless of the direction of the release site from the loft. Similar pigeons released under total overcast vanished randomly, whereas experienced birds released on the same days at the same sites oriented homeward. Apparently untrained pigeons require the sun for orientation but experienced pigeons do not.

Although the use of olfactory cues in pigeon navigation is well established, the generality of olfactory navigation remains uncertain because of apparent variability in results gained by different researchers in different regions. We report the results of the first experiments investigating the effect of anosmia on homing pigeons reared in a previously uninvestigated region, southern England. I...
متن کاملAn Investigation of Homing Ability in Pigeons without Previous Homing Experience
INTRODUCTION Recent experimental studies of the homing behaviour of birds, particularly of the pigeon, have sharply focused scientific attention upon this age-old problem. Evidence that pigeons released in strange territory beyond visual range of familiar landmarks are able to turn promptly toward home, regardless of the direction, was first reported by Matthews (1951). He used birds that had b...
متن کاملANOSMIA IN ZnSO4-TREATED PIGEONS: LOSS OF OLFACTORY INFORMATION DURING ONTOGENY AND THE ROLE OF SITE FAMILIARITY IN HOMING EXPERIMENTS
Depriving homing pigeons of olfactory information by spraying an 18% zinc sulphate solution onto their olfactory ephithelium results in anosmia that persists for at least 5 days (tested using the ‘orienting response’). To study whether anosmic zinc-sulphate-treated pigeons (ZnSO4-pigeons) were able to compensate for their loss of olfactory information by using familiar landmarks, we made releas...
متن کاملThe orientation of homing pigeons (Columba livia f.d.) with and without navigational experience in a two-dimensional environment
Homing pigeons are known for their excellent homing ability, and their brains seem to be functionally adapted to homing. It is known that pigeons with navigational experience show a larger hippocampus and also a more lateralised brain than pigeons without navigational experience. So we hypothesized that experience may have an influence also on orientation ability. We examined two groups of pige...
