Embodied/Situated Cognition and Evolutionary Devolopment as They Apply to Artificial Intelligence

چکیده

Much of the work in artificial intelligence (AI), automated planning, machine learning, computer vision, and related fields focus primarily on the capabilities of formal logic, statistics, and other mathematical tools to emulate human cognitive capabilities. Though these areas have in fact seen significant success (e.g., spam detection, information retrieval, etc.), the much-sought goal of a human-level, strong AI has been firmly outside the reach of the field. In the past two decades, however, seekers of strong AI have gradually been waking up to a new paradigm: it may not be possible to replicate human-level cognitive capabilities divorced from the human physical experience of the real world. Restated, human-level reasoning cannot be achieved using the mechanics of formal logic, probability, and statistical inference alone; human-level cognition instead requires an approximation of human physical and social experience in which to learn.

Embodied In 697 Part D | 37 . 1 37 . Embodied Intelligence

Embodied intelligence is the computational approach to the design and understanding of intelligent behavior in embodied and situated agents through the consideration of the strict coupling between the agent and its environment (situatedness), mediated by the constraints of the agent’s own body, perceptual and motor system, and brain (embodiment). The emergence of the field of embodied intellige...

The ‘What’, ‘How’ and the ‘Why’ of Evolutionary Robotics

The field of embodied artificial intelligence is maturing, and as such has progressed from what questions (“what is embodiment?”) to how questions: how should the body plan of an autonomous robot be designed to maximize the chance that it will exhibit a desired set of behaviors. In order to stand on its own however, rather than a reaction to classical AI, the field of embodied AI must address w...

Embodying and Situating Cognitive Vision What Cognitive Vision can learn from Embodied and Situated Cognition

Cognitive Vision is a new sub-area of computer vision that tries to enhance vision with cognitive methods such as learning and reasoning. We want to go a step further and review ideas from embodied AI and situated cognition as well as critiques of traditional computer vision to derive a set of guidelines to build new kinds of cognitive vision systems that could overcome the limitations of conte...

A brain in a vat cannot break out: why the singularity must be extended, embedded and embodied

The present paper criticizes Chalmers's discussion of the Singularity, viewed as the emergence of a superhuman intelligence via the self-amplifying development of artificial intelligence. The situated and embodied view of cognition rejects the notion that intelligence could arise in a closed "brain-in-a-vat" system, because intelligence is rooted in a high-bandwidth, sensory-motor interaction w...

Transformations in Cognitive Science: Implications and Issues Posed

Cognitive science currently offers models of cognition that depart substantively from those of information processing models and classical artificial intelligence, while it embraces methods of inquiry that include case-based, ethnographic, and philosophical methods. To illustrate, five overlapping approaches that constitute departures from classical representational cognitive science are briefl...
