High-intensity interval training: a time-efficient strategy for health promotion?

چکیده

Introduction Regular endurance training induces numerous physiologic adaptations that facilitate improved exercise tolerance and physical well-being, in large part by increasing the body’s capacity to transport and utilize oxygen. In contrast, brief bouts of high-intensity, sprint-type exercise are generally thought to have less of an effect on aerobic energy metabolism. However, a growing body of evidence suggests that low-volume, high-intensity interval training (HIT) may represent a time-efficient strategy to induce adaptations normally associated with endurance training. This commentary briefly highlights recent work from my laboratory that has examined rapid adaptations in exercise capacity and aerobic energy metabolism after short-term HIT.

High-intensity interval exercise training for public health: a big HIT or shall we HIT it on the head?

BACKGROUND The efficacy of high-intensity interval training for a broad spectrum of cardio-metabolic health outcomes is not in question. Rather, the effectiveness of this form of exercise is at stake. In this paper we debate the issues concerning the likely success or failure of high-intensity interval training interventions for population-level health promotion. DISCUSSION Biddle maintains t...

High-intensity Interval Training and Obesity

High-intensity interval training (HIIT) has become a promising strategy to induce a number of metabolic adaptations and alter body composition. Recent evidence suggests that HIIT can be a time-efficient strategy to promote health in sedentary overweight/obese individuals. This may be contrary to the belief held by some health professionals that training programs at high intensity are not approp...

Health Promotion in Cardiac Rehabilitation Patients through the Use of a High-Intensity Interval Training Protocol

According to the American Heart Association’s (AHA) recent statistical update, over 2150 Americans die each day from cardiovascular disease (CVD), which equals approximately 1 death every 40 seconds; many of which were under the age of 65 years old [1]. In 2009, 386,324 people, 1 in 6 Americans, died as a result of coronary artery disease (CAD) alone [1]. They also estimate 150,000 people have ...

Effects of Low-Intensity Resistance versus High-Intensity Interval Aerobic Training on Serum Interleukin-6 Concentration and Insulin Resistance Markers in Obese and Young Men

Introduction: Regular exercise training is a useful strategy to reduce inflammatory markers, but it is still unclear what type of training is better. Thus, this study compared the effects of 12-week of low-intensity resistance (Low-RT) and high-intensity interval aerobic training (High-IAT) on serum interleukin (IL)-6 levels and insulin resistance (IR) markers in obese and young men. Methods I...

Time-dependent Effects of High Intensity Interval Training on Oxygen Kinetics in Females

Background. Because VO2max doesn’t provide any detailed information about aerobic examinations Oxygen Kinetic is used for more accuracy. Long intensive and repetitive exercises with sufficient time lead to increase in aerobic parameters like kinetic absorption of oxygen. Objectives. The purpose of this study was to determine time dependent effects of short-time high intensity interval...
