DROSOPHILA bHLH-PAS DEVELOPMENTAL REGULATORY PROTEINS

چکیده
1. INTRODUCTION Drosophila bHLH-PAS proteins play important roles in development and physiology. They can be divided into three groups: (i) Tgo and its bHLH-PAS dimerization partners, (ii) circadian rhythms, and (iii) hormone function. The Tgo dimerization group carries-out many developmental roles, and includes: Dysfusion (Dys), Similar (Sima), Single-minded (Sim), Spineless (Ss), and Trachealess (Trh). They are the subject of this chapter (the other Drosophila PAS genes are reviewed in the chapters by Hogenesch and Kay, Montell, and Wilson). Members of the Tgo dimerization group share a number of common features. Foremost, they form DNA-binding heterodimers with Tgo. They are well-conserved between nematodes, insects, and mammals. Each carries-out multiple developmental roles, and some have roles as master regulators of tissue formation. The tissues, cell types, and biological processes whose development and function are influenced by bHLH-PAS proteins are diverse. There is little redundancy or overlap of function, although, there is one example of a bHLH-PAS protein regulating levels of another.

Control of cell lineage-specific development and transcription by bHLH-PAS proteins.
The basic–helix–loop–helix-PAS (bHLH–PAS) proteins comprise a prominent class of transcriptional regulators that control a variety of developmental and physiological events including neurogenesis, tracheal and salivary duct formation, toxin metabolism, circadian rhythms, response to hypoxia, and hormone receptor function. The bHLH–PAS proteins have a number of similarities with other bHLH prote...

Strange fits of passion I have knownellipsis (W Wordsworth, 'Strange fits of passion'.) bHLH-PAS proteins are regulators of developmental and physiological events that are well conserved between vertebrates and invertebrates. Recent studies using mouse knockouts of bHLH-PAS genes have provided novel insight into the roles of hypoxia inducible factors in controlling oxygen-regulated development ...
متن کاملFunctional interactions between Drosophila bHLH/PAS, Sox, and POU transcription factors regulate CNS midline expression of the slit gene.
During Drosophila embryogenesis the CNS midline cells have organizing activities that are required for proper elaboration of the axon scaffold and differentiation of neighboring neuroectodermal and mesodermal cells. CNS midline development is dependent on Single-minded (Sim), a basic-helix-loop-helix (bHLH)-PAS transcription factor. We show here that Fish-hook (Fish), a Sox HMG domain protein, ...
متن کاملCharacterization and developmental expression of xSim, a Xenopus bHLH/PAS gene related to the Drosophila neurogenic master gene single-minded
We have isolated a novel gene from Xenopus, denominated xSim, which encodes a protein of 760 amino acids containing a basic helix-loop-helix (bHLH) motif contiguous to a PAS domain characteristic of an emerging family of transcriptional regulators so called bHLH/PAS. xSim shares a strong amino acid sequence identity with the Drosophila Single-minded (dSim) and with the murine Sim1 and Sim2 prot...

The Drosophila Zelda transcription factor plays an important role in regulating transcription at the embryonic maternal-to-zygotic transition. However, expression of zelda continues throughout embryogenesis in cells including the developing CNS and trachea, but little is known about its post-blastoderm functions. In this paper, it is shown that zelda directly controls CNS midline and tracheal e...
