Square-tiled Surfaces and Rigid Curves on Moduli Spaces

چکیده
We study the algebro-geometric aspects of Teichmüller curves parameterizing square-tiled surfaces with two applications. (a) There exist infinitely many rigid curves on the moduli space of hyperelliptic curves. They span the same extremal ray of the cone of moving curves. Their union is a Zariski dense subset. Hence they yield infinitely many rigid curves with the same properties on the moduli space of stable n-pointed rational curves for even n. (b) The limit of slopes of Teichmüller curves and the sum of Lyapunov exponents for the Teichmüller geodesic flow determine each other, which yields information about the cone of effective divisors on the moduli space of curves.

20 05 Shimura - and Teichmüller Curves
We classify curves in the moduli space of curves that are both Shimura-and Teichmüller curves: Except for the moduli space of genus one curves there is only a single such curve. We start with a Hodge-theoretic description of Shimura curves and Teichmüller curves that reveals similarities and differences of the two classes of curves. The proof of the classification relies on the geometry of squa...
متن کامل5 Siegel – Veech Constants in H ( 2 )
Abelian differentials on Riemann surfaces can be seen as translation surfaces, which are flat surfaces with cone-type singularities. Closed geodesics for the associated flat metrics form cylinders, whose number under a given maximal length generically has quadratic asymptotics in this length. Siegel–Veech constants are coefficients of these quadratic growth rates, and coincide for almost all su...
متن کاملSchwarz Triangle Mappings and Teichmüller Curves: Abelian Square-tiled Surfaces
We consider normal covers of CP with abelian deck group, branched over at most four points. Families of such covers yield arithmetic Teichmüller curves, whose period mapping may be described geometrically in terms of Schwarz triangle mappings. These Teichmüller curves are generated by abelian square-tiled surfaces. We compute all individual Lyapunov exponents for abelian squaretiled surfaces, a...
متن کاملCovers of the Projective Line and the Moduli Space of Quadratic Differentials
Consider the Hurwitz space parameterizing covers of P branched at four points. We study its intersection with divisor classes on the moduli space of curves. As applications, we calculate the slope of Teichmüller curves parameterizing square-tiled cyclic covers. In addition, we come up with a relation among the slope of Teichmüller curves, the sum of Lyapunov exponents and the Siegel-Veech const...
متن کاملCovers of Elliptic Curves and the Lower Bound for Slopes of Effective Divisors on Mg
Consider genus g curves that admit degree d covers to elliptic curves only branched at one point with a fixed ramification type. The locus of such covers forms a one parameter family Y that naturally maps into the moduli space of stable genus g curves Mg. We study the geometry of Y , and produce a combinatorial method by which to investigate its slope, irreducible components, genus and orbifold...
