چکیده

Tomographic imaging using both laboratory sources and synchrotron radiation (SR) was performed to achieve a multi-scale damage assessment of carbon fibre composites subjected to impact damage, allowing various internal damage modes to be studied in three-dimensions. The focus of this study is the comparison of different tomographic methods, identifying their capabilities and limitations, and their use in a complementary manner for creating an overall 3D damage assessment at both macroscopic and microscopic levels. Overall, microfocus laboratory computed tomography (μCT) offers efficient routine assessment of damage at mesoscopic and macroscopic levels in engineering-scale test coupons and relatively high spatial resolutions on trimmed-down samples; whilst synchrotron radiation computed tomography (SRCT) and computed laminography (SRCL) offer scans with the highest

Composite Laminate Impact Damage Assessment by High Resolution 3d X-ray Tomography and Laminography

Improvements to toughening mechanisms in composite materials have hitherto relied on visual inspection techniques that can be rather limited, especially since the inherent damage behaviour is three-dimensional (3D) requiring high resolution to capture micro-cracks and similar damage. To achieve a better understanding of impact damage behaviour, synchrotron radiation computed laminography (SRCL)...

Multi-scale 3d Imaging of Carbon Fibre Laminate Impact and Compression after Impact Damage Using Computed Tomography and Laminography

3D X-ray computed tomography (CT) was used to study the effects of particle toughening within unidirectional carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) materials subjected to impact damage, followed by ex situ CT of compression after impact (CAI) tests at incremental loads. A multi-scale approach utilizing synchrotron radiation CT and laminography was used to study the damage micro-mechanisms of im...

NDT characterisation of carbon-fibre and glass-fibre composites using non-invasive imaging techniques

The prerequisite for more competent and cost effective transport has led to the evolution of innovative testing and evaluation procedures. Non-destructive testing and evaluation (NDT & E) techniques for assessing the integrity of composite structures are essential to both reduce manufacturing costs and out of service time of transport means due to maintenance. Smart methods for assessing the in...

Accuracy Assessment of Ultrasonic C-scan and X-ray Radiography Methods for Impact Damage Detection in Glass Fiber Reinforced Polyester Composites

The present study introduces two quantitative parameters to compare the accuracy of ultrasonic C-scan testing and X-ray radiography methods in the damaged area detection under low-velocity impact in polymer-based composites. For this purpose, the hand lay-up technique of composite processing was employed to prepare the composite specimen. A composite specimen consisting of the glass fiber reinf...

A Micro-Computed Tomography Technique to Study the Quality of Fibre Optics Embedded in Composite Materials

Quality of embedment of optical fibre sensors in carbon fibre-reinforced polymers plays an important role in the resultant properties of the composite, as well as for the correct monitoring of the structure. Therefore, availability of a tool able to check the optical fibre sensor-composite interaction becomes essential. High-resolution 3D X-ray Micro-Computed Tomography, or Micro-CT, is a relat...
