An Hereditary Complex in the Domestic Fowl.

چکیده
Brachydactyly, syndactyly, and leg-feathering or ptilopody‘ are among the many characteristics of the domestic fowl that have been studied from the standpoint of genetics. The last in particular, owing to its widespread occurrence, has aroused especial interest. Its heredity has been investigated by HURST (1905), DAVENPORT (1909), and more recently by PUNNETT and BAILEY ( 1918). The genetic behavior of syndactyly has been studied by DAVENPORT (1909) and that of brachydactyly by DANFORTH (1919 a). The purpose of this paper is to present evidence that these three characteristics, at first sight apparently distinct and unrelated, are in reality the product of a single gene or a single combination of genes. The possibility that this is the case was suggested in the earlier paper on brachydactyly, but at the time that paper was written, sufficiently critical breeding tests had not been made, the suggestion being based largely on morphological evidence. The additional data now available, while not abundant, seem to be significant, and are therefore put on record. Except where otherwise indicated the descriptions and data are all from individuals derived, on one side at least, from a single family, the relationships of the principal members of which are shown in the accompanying pedigree chart. None of those indicated in the chart was syndactyl.

Esophagotomy in a domestic fowl: a rare case report
Background: Foreign body in esophagus in birds is rarely reported in literature. Most common site of foreign body in birds is proventriculus and ventriculus. The purpose of this study is to discuss the diagnosis of a large sharp foreign body in the distal third of the neck by plain radiography and its retrieval through esophagotomy and subsequent survival of the fowl. C...

Developing supernumerary limbs is a rare congenital condition that only a few cases have been documented. Depending on the cause and developmental conditions, they may be single, multiple or complicated, and occur as a syndrome or associated with other anomalies. Polymelia is defined as the presence of extra limb(s) which have been reported in human, mouse, chicken, calf and lamb. It seems that...
متن کاملSophisticated Fowl: The Complex Behaviour and Cognitive Skills of Chickens and Red Junglefowl
The world's most numerous bird, the domestic chicken, and their wild ancestor, the red junglefowl, have long been used as model species for animal behaviour research. Recently, this research has advanced our understanding of the social behaviour, personality, and cognition of fowl, and demonstrated their sophisticated behaviour and cognitive skills. Here, we overview some of this research, star...
متن کاملA comparative study on of Gastrointestinal parasites in Local and Broiler fowls available in Sangli district, Maharashtra
Poultry birds. Domestic fowl and broiler are constantly in exposure of both ecto-parasites and endoparasites. The parasitic infestation badly affect the industry in various ways, low weight birds, meat with low quality in taste and nutrients, weight reduction etc. The present study shows that broiler bird is less infected by ecto-parasites and gastrointestinal; parasites as compared to domestic...
متن کاملPlumage Color Allelism in the Red Jungle Fowl (Gallus Gallus) and Related Domestic Forms.
HE lack of an ancestral “standard of reference”, “normal” or “wild type” T for use in genetic studies of the domestic fowl has been of little concern to many poultry geneticists (for a recent discussion of this topic see JAAP and HOLLANDER 1954). In the field of plumage color inheritance, however, a standard of reference seems necessary in describing the action of mutant genes. What the standar...
